Curator’s statement

Wailea, Maui, holds a special place in my heart as the destination where my husband and I honeymooned 20 years ago. Since then, we've returned numerous times, both with and without our kids, and most recently last year. Many visitors flock to Lahaina, but I believe Wailea is Maui's true gem. It offers serene luxury, walkable charm and incredible dining options that provide a more refined experience without the typical touristy feel. With plenty of exciting activities to enjoy, from ocean adventures to cultural experiences, Wailea's beauty and tranquility is ideal. It is a haven for those seeking relaxation and sophistication.

Things to do on Maui

Whale watching from a sail boat: Experience the majesty of Maui's humpback whales on a sailboat tour, complete with onboard marine naturalists and amenities like soft drinks and cocktails (Dec.–May, peak months are Jan. and Feb.)

Surf lesson: Learn to surf with a professional instructor in a private or small-group setting. You'll receive personalized guidance and use of the necessary equipment.

Resort activities: Many Wailea resorts offer a variety of complimentary activities. This includes lei-making, hula lessons, ukulele classes, yoga sessions and cultural experiences. This includes an Outrigger Canoe Experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture and enjoy a range of fun activities without leaving the resort.

Wailea Beach Path: Stroll along this picturesque 1.5-mile coastal path, which winds past five stunning beaches and eight world-class resorts, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and nearby islands like Lanai and Molokini. It's perfect for a morning jog or an evening sunset walk, providing easy access to beautiful beaches and resort amenities along the way.

Hike Waihe’e Ridge Trail: Embark on a moderately challenging hike along the Waihe’e Ridge Trail, offering breathtaking views of the West Maui Mountains and lush forests.

Road to Hana: Drive the scenic Hana Highway. It is a 64-mile journey through lush rainforests, over one-lane bridges and past numerous waterfalls, offering stunning natural beauty and cultural stops.

Feast at Mōkapu Lūʻau: Enjoy a sophisticated evening at the Feast at Mōkapu Lūʻau, featuring family-style dining, live music, and cultural performances in a beautiful setting at the Andaz Maui resort.

Pool time: I love relaxing at an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, with my hardest decision of the day being what cocktail to order next!

Places to eat & drink on Maui

Ferraro’s: An open-air Italian restaurant at the Four Seasons, perfect for families, offering oceanfront dining with stunning sunset views.

Spago: Wolfgang Puck’s Hawaiian fusion restaurant, known for its Spicy Ahi Tuna in Sesame Miso Cones and breathtaking sunset views from outdoor tables.

The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea: A romantic, fine-dining experience with panoramic ocean views, intimate balcony seating and a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Monkeypod: A casual craft beer bar and restaurant offering delicious food, laid-back vibes and a more affordable dining option in Wailea.

Lobby Lounge at the Four Seasons: A relaxed spot for live music, sunset views and light appetizers or drinks before dinner.

Morimoto Maui: Located at the Andaz Maui resort. Morimoto offers a sophisticated dining experience with stunning ocean views, featuring high-quality sushi and Japanese cuisine crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Need to know

If you plan to stay in Wailea for your entire trip, you can easily manage without a car. I can arrange airport transfers, Uber is available, and most resorts offer complimentary transportation within the area. Many restaurants may also be within walking distance, depending on your itinerary. However, if you plan to go hiking or drive the Road to Hana, having a car is highly recommended, and I can help you find the best deal.
