Day 1: Doheny State Beach & fish and chips

Dana Point cliff view
Doheny State Beach is a California State Park with beachfront campsites, picnic areas, and volleyball courts. Surfing is popular here. Parking costs extra, but walking in is free. After your visit, head across the street to Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern and try the beer battered fish and chips—you won’t be disappointed.
Day 2: Whale watching & ice cream

Next up is whale watching. Stroll through Dana Point Harbor for restaurants, yachts, and maybe a sunbathing sea lion. Choose between whale watching or wine tasting tour, then grab ice cream at Scoop Deck. During Christmas, the harbor hosts a boat parade with decorated boats.
Day 3: Golf day

Ready for golf? Take the free trolley to Monarch Beach Golf Course at Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach, surrounded by luxury homes and featuring a private beach club. After your game, stroll along Dana Strand Beach, where you might spot dolphins just offshore.
Need to know
Dana Point offers plenty for walkers and bikers, with trails connecting its beaches. The city is dog-friendly—most restaurants have outdoor seating for pets, and all recommended hotels accept dogs.
