Advisor - South Africa: Safari & The Coast
Curator’s statement

People say that when you go to Africa for the first time, it changes you—that you might leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you. I have traveled extensively across the globe, and this was different. I spent the first two weeks of May in South Africa. I had mostly sun for my stay, but on the wetter days I saw moody skies and rainbows that were quite magical. Head north to Kruger for safari, and the weather is dry with cool mornings and warm afternoons—one of the best times of the year for safari.

Things to do in South Africa

Looking down on the coast line of Cape Town, thank you to Cape Town Helicopters

  • Hike Lion’s Head or Table Mountain with a local guide for sweeping views. If you prefer, Table Mountain is also accessible by cable car for the same views. For the most incredible aerial views, book an excursion with Cape Town Helicopters.

  • Explore the coast and see the African Penguins by the beach. Stop for lunch on the water, or have a picnic prepared by your guides.

  • Explore Time Out Market Cape Town, Africa’s first, featuring top chefs under one roof. Located by the waterfront, this is a great place for a casual dinner and to walk around. Browse the Watershed Market for 150+ local designers, just around the corner from Time Out.

  • The Birkenhead House in Hermanus, a short drive, less than two hours from Cape Town, is an intimate Royal Portfolio beach house overlooking cliffs. This is the best spot for whale watching (mid-summer is prime), sea kayaking, and long, gorgeous coastal walks.

  • La Residence is tucked away in the Winelands, about an hour outside of Cape Town. Lush gardens, vineyards, art, and incredible cuisine. Hiking, biking, shopping, or hop on the wine tram in Franschhoek for an super fun way to experience many different vineyards.

  • Royal Malewane has four intimate safari lodges, all located in Kruger National Park on a private reserve. This lodge is stunning, combining African art, bold colors, incredible service, and the most knowledgable guides. Each of the four lodges is unique in design, but have the same level of hospitality and expertise.

Places to eat & drink in South Africa

The iconic sundowner. A G&T with different local botanicals

  • ROOI: South African grill, all over open flame with local ingredients and a focus on meat. At the newly renovated One & Only in Cape Town.

  • Upper Union: Fun sharing plates, bold flavors mixing international flavors. Located on the second floor of a house in a very cool setting.

  • Grub & Vine: Bistro-style dining; ever-changing menu.

  • The Blue Room: Live jazz and soul below Grub & Vine.

  • The Silo: Reserve a table on the rooftop for sunset. Enjoy a cocktail and light bites

  • Kloof Street House: Go here for dinner with a great vibe. Set in a Victorian home with fairy-lit gardens, cozy lounges, and brasserie-style dining. Great cocktails, food, and weekend jazz.

Need to know

I would not wait to visit South Africa, because I believe you will want to come back! There is too much to see in one trip, something for everyone.
