Curator’s statement
Just an hour from the international airport, Antigua immediately drew me in with its cobblestone streets, rich history, incredible food, and volcano views in every direction. I loved wandering its charming 7-by-9 grid, never feeling truly lost. Some of my favorite moments were the simplest—admiring vibrant Mayan textiles, sipping great coffee, enjoying fresh mango from a street vendor, and soaking in the city's beautiful colonial architecture. As a UNESCO World Heritage city, Antigua beautifully blends culture, adventure, and luxury, making it a place I'd return to in a heartbeat.

Things to do in Antigua

Sandia a la plancha (grilled watermelon) at Villa Bokeh
Antigua Brewing Company
One of my favorite views in Antigua was from the rooftop of Antigua Brewing Company. Grab a drink around sunset and watch the volcanoes light up around the city—you might even catch a glimpse of Volcán de Fuego's lava glowing in the distance.
Starbucks Antigua
I'm usually not one to seek out a Starbucks while traveling, but this one is worth a stop. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial building, it felt more like a local landmark than a coffee chain, with a gorgeous courtyard and unique Guatemalan artwork.
Santa Catalina Arch
The Santa Catalina Arch is Antigua's most iconic landmark, and seeing it in person did not disappoint. I found myself walking back to it multiple times, admiring how perfectly it frames the colorful streets and surrounding volcanoes.
Mercado Central
For a glimpse into everyday life in Antigua, spend some time wandering Mercado Central. One of my favorite simple pleasures was grabbing a freshly sliced mango from a street vendor and browsing the colorful stalls filled with local produce and handmade goods.
Hilosophy & Wayil
I loved shopping for textiles in Antigua, especially at Hilosophy, where I learned about weaving techniques that have been passed down for generations. For a more contemporary take on Guatemalan craftsmanship, Wayil offers beautifully designed clothing and accessories made by local artisans.
Chocolate making
Our chocolate-making experience was both fun and surprisingly educational. Learning how cacao is transformed into chocolate—and creating my own treats to take home—made for one of the most memorable afternoons of the trip.
Caoba Farms
Just outside the city center, Caoba Farms offered a peaceful change of pace from Antigua's bustling streets. I loved wandering through the organic gardens, browsing local products, and enjoying a fresh farm-to-table meal surrounded by nature.
Villa Bokeh
Lunch at Villa Bokeh was one of the highlights of my time in Antigua. Between the stunning estate setting, volcano views, and exceptional cuisine (try the grilled watermelon), it felt like a luxurious escape just minutes from town.
Church and domes of La Merced
Climbing to the top of La Merced was absolutely worth the small fee and effort. The panoramic views over Antigua's rooftops and surrounding volcanoes gave me a whole new appreciation for the city's beauty.
Cerro de la Cruz
For one of the best viewpoints in Antigua, take a quick ride to Cerro de la Cruz. The short hike rewards you with sweeping views of the city framed by Volcán de Agua—a scene that perfectly captures the magic of Antigua.
Coffee break
Antigua's coffee culture is reason enough to visit. I loved popping into any of the cafés throughout the day, enjoying locally grown coffee while taking a break from the cobblestone streets and endless sightseeing.

Need to know
Antigua makes for an incredible home base for exploring more of Guatemala—from volcanoe treks and coffee farms to lakes and traditional villages. I loved returning here after long days out, with the city feeling both vibrant and comforting at the same time.
The cobblestone streets do mean you’ll want comfortable, supportive shoes.
I was glad to have a light jacket for the cool evenings at 5,000 feet, where the air stays pleasantly crisp year-round.
For a seamless arrival, I always recommend arranging a car service from the airport so you can ease straight into the magic of Antigua without any stress.
