Curator’s statement
There are few places that feel like summer quite like Saratoga Springs. For me, Saratoga isn't just a destination—it's a tradition. I've spent every summer for as long as I can remember making the annual pilgrimage north. What used to be a three-and-a-half-hour drive from my hometown on Long Island has now become a flight from Lexington, Kentucky, but the excitement of arriving never changes. While Saratoga Race Course is undoubtedly the heart of the city during July and August, there's so much more to discover beyond the grandstand. From mornings strolling Broadway with a coffee in hand to afternoons on Saratoga Lake, evenings at SPAC, and unforgettable meals at locally loved restaurants, Saratoga has a way of drawing people in and making them want to return year after year. Whether you're visiting for the races, planning a long weekend, or looking for the perfect summer getaway, Saratoga offers an incredible blend of world-class Thoroughbred racing, charming boutique hotels, outstanding restaurants, outdoor adventure, and small-town hospitality. After decades of visiting—and countless trips as both a racing fan and hospitality professional—I've put together my favorite places to stay, eat, drink, shop, and explore. Think of this as the guide I'd send my closest friends before their first trip to Saratoga. Welcome to one of my favorite places in the world.

Things to do in Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Lake
My favorite things to do in Saratoga
Although I no longer get to spend the entire summer in Saratoga thanks to my full-time job, I still make it a priority to visit a few times each season—and every trip includes a handful of my favorite traditions. Whether you're visiting for a long weekend or an extended stay during racing season, these are the experiences I never miss.
Get out on the water
One of my favorite ways to spend a summer day is on the water. Rent a kayak from Lake Lonely and paddle through the peaceful scenery, soaking up the sunshine and fresh air. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even make your way all the way to Saratoga Lake. For a full day on the lake, rent a pontoon boat on Saratoga Lake, or venture about 30 minutes north to Lake George if you're looking for a larger lake with plenty of room for watersports and exploring.
Relax at Saratoga Spa State Park
No trip to Saratoga is complete without spending time in Saratoga Spa State Park. I love walking the tree-lined trails, visiting the natural mineral springs and geysers, and simply slowing down for a few hours.
One tradition I never skip? A visit to the historic Roosevelt Baths & Spa. Originally established in 1935, the spa is famous for its naturally effervescent mineral baths, where mineral-rich spring water is blended to the perfect temperature for a relaxing soak. They also offer massages, facials, body treatments, yoga, and wellness services, making it one of my favorite places to unwind after a day at the races.
Spend an evening at SPAC
Before you visit, check the schedule at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). This iconic outdoor venue hosts performances by the New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and many of today's biggest touring artists. I've seen everything here—from Riverdance to Lil Wayne—and annual favorites like Phish and Dave Matthews Band always draw huge crowds. One of the best parts? You can grab a lawn ticket, spread out a blanket, and enjoy one of the country's most unique outdoor concert experiences.
Stroll historic Broadway
No visit to Saratoga is complete without wandering down Broadway, one of America's great Main Streets. Lined with locally owned boutiques, bookstores, galleries, restaurants, and cafés, it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon. A few of my favorite stops include Impressions of Saratoga, Violet's, Miss Scarlett's Boutique, Northshire Bookstore, and The Saratoga Olive Oil Company.
If you're out early, grab breakfast at Compton's Restaurant—a local institution that's absolutely worth the wait (just remember to bring cash!). Later in the day, stop by Cantina for weekday happy hour and their famous two-for-one margaritas and sangrias.
For lunch, dinner, or cocktails, Morrissey's Lounge & Bistro inside The Adelphi is always one of my favorite stops. If you can snag a seat on the patio, you'll have some of the best people-watching in town—you never know if you'll spot a Hall of Fame trainer, a top jockey, or even a celebrity racing fan. Don't miss the Clothesline Bacon or their award-winning Irish Coastal Chowder. After dinner, head just down the street to The Coat Room, an intimate speakeasy-style cocktail bar that's perfect for ending the evening.
Explore Skidmore College
Just a short walk from downtown, Skidmore College is one of Saratoga's hidden gems. The walk to campus takes you through beautiful tree-lined neighborhoods filled with historic homes, making it an attraction in itself. Growing up, I attended several summer camps at Skidmore, so it always brings back great memories. While you're there, don't miss the Tang Teaching Museum, one of the country's premier contemporary art museums, featuring rotating exhibitions that make every visit a little different.
Places to eat & drink in Saratoga Springs

Heritage Restaurant
One of the hardest parts of any Saratoga trip is deciding where to eat. Every time I'm in town, I find myself wishing I had just one more meal. Whether you're looking for a casual lunch, an upscale dinner after the races, or the perfect cocktail to end the evening, Saratoga has an incredible food scene that goes far beyond what you'd expect from a small city. Here are some of my favorite spots.
Casual favorites
Compadres
This family-owned Mexican-American diner is one of Saratoga's hidden gems. The menu offers everything from authentic Mexican dishes to classic American comfort food, making it a great option for groups with different tastes. I always start with the chips and guacamole before ordering the chorizo tostadas or enchiladas verdes. Come hungry—you'll almost certainly leave with leftovers.
Roma Foods
If you're looking for the perfect sandwich to pack for a day at the races, on the lake, or while hiking, Roma is a must. Fresh bread, quality ingredients, generous portions, and friendly service make this one of my favorite lunch stops.
Uncommon Grounds
No Saratoga morning is complete without a stop at Uncommon Grounds. Expect a line—but don't worry, it moves quickly. Their freshly roasted coffee and New York-style bagels have made them a downtown institution for decades.
Hattie's Restaurant
No Saratoga visit is complete without experiencing Hattie's. Famous for its award-winning fried chicken for more than 80 years, this local institution even defeated Bobby Flay on "Throwdown". Don't miss the fried chicken, chicken and waffles, jambalaya, or a slice of Key Lime Pie. If you're spending the day at the track, stop by Hattie's Track Shack for a fried chicken sandwich and a glass of champagne between races.
Waterfront dining: Lago by Druthers
Located directly on Saratoga Lake, Lago is one of my favorite places to spend a summer evening. The views are spectacular, especially at sunset, and it's the perfect place to relax after a day on the water. My recommendation? Order the Steamer Bucket, pair it with a frozen strawberry daiquiri, and enjoy the lake views.
Special occasion dining
Heritage at Saratoga National
Formerly Prime, Heritage has become one of Saratoga's premier dining destinations. Overlooking the 18th green at Saratoga National Golf Club, it offers one of the area's most beautiful outdoor dining settings. The newly expanded lounge has quickly become a favorite, and the seafood tower—with lobster, shrimp cocktail, oysters, tuna tartare, and lump crab—is already on my must-try list.
Osteria Danny
One of the best Italian restaurants in town, Osteria Danny focuses on seasonal ingredients and elevated Italian cuisine. Reservations are highly recommended. Don't miss the Bada Bing Shrimp, bacon-crusted cod, or my personal favorite, the Veal Danny served over creamy polenta.
Nove Italian Restaurant
Located just outside Saratoga in Wilton, Nove is absolutely worth the short drive. This restaurant has been part of my family's Saratoga traditions for years, and the warm hospitality makes you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in. Their brick oven pizzas, meatballs, Chicken Mario, and Sunday Sauce (served only on Sundays) are all outstanding.
Regent Restaurant
Located inside The Brookmere, Regent is one of Saratoga's newest French-inspired restaurants. Don't skip the warm bread basket, the famous burger, or the artichoke dip. If you're feeling adventurous, they also have a selection of orange wines, which are always fun to introduce friends to.
Noah's
One of Saratoga's newest restaurants, Noah's opened last fall and is already generating plenty of buzz. Chef Noah, formerly of Siro's, has brought his culinary creativity to this exciting new venture. It's high on my list to visit this summer, and after my parents recently enjoyed the Chef's Table experience, I can't wait to try it myself. They said it was absolutely spectacular.
Taverna Novo
Italian food is one of Saratoga's specialties, and Taverna Novo is one of the best. Tucked away on Beekman Street, this cozy neighborhood favorite delivers exceptional food and warm hospitality. Patti will greet you like family, and the menu is filled with standout Italian classics. If you're a veal lover, this is the place to go, and their thoughtfully curated wine list is perfect if you're looking to discover something new.
Pennell's Restaurant
If you're looking for an old-school Saratoga steakhouse that's a favorite among locals and racing fans, don't overlook Pennell's Restaurant, located just behind the Saratoga Casino Hotel and harness track. The atmosphere is classic and unpretentious, with generous portions and consistently great food. If you go, do yourself a favor and order the steak topped with blue cheese crumbles—it's one of my favorite meals in Saratoga. Pair it with a baked potato, and you'll understand why this spot has such a loyal following.
Breweries & Irish pubs
Tree House Brewing Company
Located across from Saratoga Spa State Park, Tree House is one of my favorite breweries in the area. Whether you're traveling with family, friends, kids, or even your dog, it's a great place to spend an afternoon. Their hazy IPAs are nationally recognized, the pizza is excellent, and the indoor fireplaces make it just as enjoyable on a rainy day as it is on a sunny afternoon.
The Parting Glass
A true neighborhood Irish pub where you'll find cold Guinness, friendly locals, and a dart board waiting. It's exactly the kind of relaxed place every great town should have.
Saratoga after dark
Saratoga comes alive after the races, and Caroline Street is the center of it all. Whether you're looking for handcrafted cocktails, live music, or a lively piano bar, there's something for everyone.
Siro's
One of Saratoga's most iconic post-race destinations, Siro's is located directly across from the racetrack, making it the perfect first stop after a day of racing. Grab dinner, order a cocktail, and don't miss the legendary piano bar, where singalongs and live requests have become a Saratoga tradition.
9 Maple Avenue
If craft cocktails are your thing, 9 Maple is a must. This intimate Victorian-style jazz bar features one of the country's largest martini menus with more than 200 options. It's perfect for date night or a relaxed evening with friends.
Gaffney's
Fresh off a stunning renovation, Gaffney's remains one of Saratoga's legendary nightlife destinations. The newly opened Parlor offers a sophisticated speakeasy-style experience, while The Starting Gate provides a more energetic atmosphere with live sports, great food, and cold beer.
Trotters
If dive bars are your thing, Trotters is a Saratoga classic. This no-frills neighborhood favorite is known for its inexpensive drinks, friendly regulars, and lively atmosphere. The bar stools are almost always full, making it the perfect place to strike up a conversation, grab a cold beer, and experience Saratoga like a local.
The Wild Horse
Formerly Dango's, The Wild Horse has quickly become one of Saratoga's newest nightlife hot spots. If you're looking to dance, listen to live music, and enjoy the lively patio scene, this is where you'll want to spend your evening.
The Bunker
Whether you're a golfer or not, The Bunker is simply fun. Combining TrackMan golf simulators, scratch-made food, and craft cocktails, it's a fantastic place for groups, celebrations, rainy afternoons, or just trying something different.
Need to know
Saratoga is one of those rare places that keeps you coming back year after year. Whether you're visiting for the world-class racing, the incredible restaurants, the lake, the outdoor adventures, or simply the charm of downtown, there's always something new to discover.
Of course, this guide only scratches the surface. I'd also recommend hiking at Moreau Lake State Park, taking a day trip to Lake George for lunch at the iconic The Sagamore Resort, or venturing into Manchester, Vermont for outlet shopping, fly fishing, and a classic New England day trip.
If you're planning your own Saratoga getaway, I'd love to help. Whether it's finding the perfect hotel, securing restaurant reservations, building a custom itinerary, or sharing even more local favorites, I'm always happy to help make your trip unforgettable.
See you in Saratoga!
