Curator’s statement
Just off south of Tampa along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Anna Maria Island captures a rare balance between Old Florida charm and a more refined, modern coastal lifestyle. With no high-rises in sight, the island feels intentionally preserved, where pastel beach cottages, quiet streets, and soft white sand set the tone for a slower pace of travel. At the same time, thoughtfully curated boutiques, waterfront dining, and elevated beachside stays bring a sense of effortless sophistication. It’s the kind of destination where simplicity and style coexist, creating an experience that feels both timeless and quietly elevated.

Things to do on Anna Maria Island

This is what slowing down in Anna Maria Island looks like.
Catch a sunset at Bean Point
Located at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island, Bean Point is easily one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on the island. With its wide stretch of soft white sand, sea oats, and uninterrupted Gulf views, it feels more secluded and untouched than many of the island’s other beaches. While swimming is permitted in certain areas, conditions can vary, so many visitors come here more for the scenery than for a full beach day. There’s truly no bad place to watch the sunset on Anna Maria Island, but this is always my personal favorite—the open Gulf views make the colors feel even more expansive and unforgettable
Explore Pine Avenue & Bridge Street
Pine Avenue and Bridge Street offer two distinct but equally essential experiences on Anna Maria Island, each reflecting a different side of its coastal charm. Pine Avenue leans more relaxed and boutique-focused, with locally owned shops, cafés, and galleries, while Bridge Street brings a livelier energy with waterfront restaurants, bars, and easy access to the beach. I always recommend visiting both—start with a slow afternoon on Pine Avenue, then head to Bridge Street in the evening for dinner, drinks, and a more social atmosphere.
Take a day trip to Egmont Key State Park
For a more secluded and unique experience, a day trip to Egmont Key offers a completely different side of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Accessible only by boat or ferry, the island features untouched beaches, historic ruins, and a working lighthouse, along with frequent sightings of dolphins and wildlife. It’s the perfect escape for those looking to explore beyond Anna Maria Island and experience something a bit more off-the-beaten-path.
Explore the Gulf waters on an inshore fishing excursion
For a more hands-on coastal experience, booking an inshore fishing charter is one of the best ways to explore the waters around Anna Maria Island. Guided by a local captain, you’ll navigate through calm bays and mangrove-lined flats while targeting species like snook, redfish, and trout. It’s a relaxed yet memorable way to spend a morning on the water, whether you’re an experienced angler or trying it for the first time.
Enjoy a sunset dolphin cruise
A sunset dolphin cruise is one of the most memorable ways to experience Anna Maria Island from the water. As you cruise along the Gulf and surrounding bays, it’s common to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat, especially in the early evening hours. Paired with a Gulf Coast sunset, the experience feels both relaxing and unforgettable.
Discover Cortez historic fishing village
Just a short drive from Anna Maria Island, Cortez is one of Florida’s last remaining historic fishing villages and offers a glimpse into a more authentic, Old Florida way of life. The waterfront community is home to working fishing docks, weathered boats, and locally owned seafood spots serving some of the freshest Gulf catch in the area. It’s the perfect place to spend a relaxed afternoon exploring coastal heritage before heading back to the island for sunset.
Explore Gulf Drive on the island trolley
The Anna Maria Island trolley offers an easy and scenic way to explore Gulf Drive, connecting many of the island’s beaches, restaurants, and local spots. It’s a convenient option for moving around the island without needing a car, especially during busier seasons. I often recommend using the trolley in the evening to hop between waterfront restaurants or casual bars, creating a relaxed and social way to experience the island. It’s an especially fun way to hop between different beachfront bars, taking in the island’s relaxed, coastal atmosphere along the way.
Places to eat & drink on Anna Maria Island

Incredible beachfront dining at The Beach House
North Shore Café
North Shore Café is one of my favorite spots to start the day on Anna Maria Island, offering a fresh and elevated take on breakfast and brunch. The menu leans light and coastal, with options like avocado toast, fresh pastries, and quality coffee in a relaxed setting. It’s the kind of place that feels both local and thoughtfully curated, perfect before heading to the beach.
Tide Tables (nearby favorite)
Just off the island in Cortez, Tide Tables is a must for fresh, no-frills Gulf seafood served right on the water. The setting is casual and unpretentious, with picnic tables overlooking the docks where the day’s catch comes in. It’s one of the best places to experience authentic Old Florida flavor and a local favorite for a reason.
The Sandbar Restaurant, Beach House Waterfront Restaurant & Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant
This trio of waterfront restaurants offers some of the most iconic dining experiences along this stretch of the Gulf Coast. Each location pairs fresh seafood with unbeatable views, whether dining directly on the sand or tucked beneath shaded trees along the water. I often recommend choosing one for a sunset dinner, as the atmosphere across all three is equally memorable.
Duffy’s Tavern or Skinny’s Place
For a more casual, classic island experience, Duffy’s Tavern and Skinny’s Place are both local institutions known for their burgers and laid-back atmosphere. These are the kinds of spots where the focus is simple, well-done food and a no-frills setting that hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s a great reminder of the island’s Old Florida roots and a fun contrast to the more waterfront-focused dining.
Slim’s Place
Slim is a go-to for a more relaxed, social dining experience, especially for those looking to catch a game or unwind after a day at the beach. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with classic bar fare and a lively but approachable energy. It’s an easy, reliable option that adds variety to the island’s dining scene.
Need to know
Book accommodations early: Anna Maria Island has limited inventory and strict development restrictions, which helps preserve its charm but also means availability can fill up quickly. Booking well in advance is key, especially during peak season and holidays. Planning ahead ensures you have access to the best locations, whether you’re looking for beachfront or a quiet residential stay.
Best time to visit: The most popular time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is warm, sunny, and less humid. Spring and early summer offer ideal beach conditions, while late summer and early fall tend to be quieter with fewer crowds and better rates, though afternoon storms are more common.
Getting around: The island is very easy to navigate, with many visitors opting for bikes, golf carts, or the free trolley that runs along Gulf Drive. Parking can be limited, especially near popular beaches, which makes alternative transportation a great option. Staying nearby in Bradenton can also provide more flexibility while still offering easy access to the island.
