Curator’s statement

When looking to truly explore Puerto Rico’s rich beaches and ocean front, these are the must hit locations while enjoying true Puerto Rican food—away from the influence of tourism. As a homeowner in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, I speak from personal experience and have done everything I recommend. This experience should be divided into two parts for each side of the island. Things to do

Underwater exploration

East side activities

  • While in San Juan, the Bacardi tour is a MUST. Enjoy your complimentary cocktail, then make two more with a shot of their exclusive rum that you can only get on property

  • Take a day trip to Culebra to visit Flamenco Beach, one of the world’s most famous beaches, and enjoy snorkeling in 30-foot deep water. Perfect for light free diving.

  • Spend time hiking and adventuring through El Yunque Rainforest. There are a plethora of activities to book.

  • Explore Vieques by meeting locals and beach hopping. Rent a car or golf cart to visit the beaches you choose and connect with local guides for the best chance to spot sea turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, and other wildlife.

  • Take a day to do some self-exploration trying food and local beaches on the east side of Puerto Rico.

West side activities

  • Wake up early and grab your favorite spot on the beach at Crash Boat Beach in northern Aguadilla (it can get packed!) The water here is so calm and clear. Get connected with a local business to do scuba diving and explore underwater sealife along with the boat wreckage. Walk on the pier and jump into the deep vibrant water to do some free diving.

  • Surfs up! Spend a morning (or the day) in Rincon, where you can learn to catch some waves with experts to teach you. In the same day, you can do your own snorkeling and swim with schools of fish. Walk to the town of Rincon and do some self-exploration and local shopping.

  • Take a quick drive to Arecibo and enjoy the rich beaches with beautiful rock formations and high-quality, authentic food and the best piña coladas you can find outside the typical tourist locations. Arecibo is still rebuilding from Hurricane Maria, but this doesn’t take away from the rich food and culture you will find.

Places to eat & drink

  • Don Pepe near El Yunque: Hearty food and beautiful scenery, with classic Mofongo.

  • The Beach house in Rincon: Amazing ocean views with lively ambiance and delicious food.
