The warmth of the people and the richness of the food made the experience even more unforgettable. It’s a place where culture, tradition, and daily life come together to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else I’ve been.

Visit Rupestrian churches: The rock-hewn churches, like Santa Maria de Idris and Santa Lucia alle Malve, are decorated with ancient frescoes and tell the story of Matera’s religious past.
Walk across the Gravina Canyon: Hike down into the ravine and cross the bridge for panoramic views of the Sassi from below. It’s one of the most breathtaking perspectives of the city.

Need to know
Matera is a walking city, so pack comfortable shoes: you’ll be navigating lots of cobblestone streets, stairways, and uneven paths through the Sassi. Because much of the old town is pedestrian-only, it’s best to stay in or near the Sassi for convenience, but be prepared that parking can be tricky if you’re driving. Summers can get very hot, while winters are chilly and damp in the caves, so plan your visit with the seasons in mind, spring and fall are especially ideal. Take your time to explore slowly and soak in the magic of this timeless city.
