Things to do in Washington, D.C.

Stroll along the iconic National Mall, home to many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol. My favorite insider tip after living in the area for more than 30 years is to visit the monuments at night. They are beautifully illuminated, far less crowded, and offer a completely different experience than during the day. If you’d rather not explore on your own, several excellent guided evening tours are available.
No visit to Washington is complete without exploring the Smithsonian museums, many of which offer free admission. You’ll find everything from American history and fine art to aviation and space exploration. One of my personal favorites is the National Portrait Gallery, where visitors can view portraits of every U.S. President and First Lady alongside cultural icons such as Muhammad Ali and Aretha Franklin. The building itself is stunning, and the surrounding Penn Quarter neighborhood is filled with great dining options, including Rasika, Zaytinya, Urban Roast, Maman, and Matchbox.
Another must-see is Arlington National Cemetery, particularly the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Witnessing the Changing of the Guard is both a solemn and unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impression.
Beyond the monuments and museums, Washington’s neighborhoods each offer their own unique character. Georgetown is beloved for its historic charm, cobblestone streets, boutique shopping, and waterfront dining. Favorite dining spots include Fiola Mare for upscale seafood, Filomena for iconic Italian cuisine (reservations are essential), Clyde’s for a classic Georgetown experience, and Martin’s Tavern, where President John F. Kennedy famously proposed to Jacqueline Kennedy. Be sure to save room for dessert at Baked & Wired or Georgetown Cupcake. The neighborhood’s beautiful historic homes and relaxed atmosphere make it one of the city’s most enjoyable places to explore.
For a more modern waterfront experience, head to The Wharf. This revitalized district offers live entertainment, rooftop bars, waterfront restaurants, and spectacular sunset views over the Potomac River. It’s also home to a lively karaoke bar that’s perfect for groups.
One of Washington’s greatest advantages is how easy it is to explore without a car. The Metro system is extensive, affordable, and connects many of the city’s most popular attractions and neighborhoods. Combined with Washington’s walkability, it’s one of the easiest major U.S. cities to navigate as a visitor.
Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms, while fall offers pleasant temperatures and colorful foliage, making both seasons ideal times to visit.

Washington, D.C. is also home to an impressive amount of green space, offering a welcome escape from the city’s museums and monuments. Rock Creek Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States, winds through the city and provides miles of scenic trails for walking, hiking, and biking. Several sections of the park surround the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, making it easy to combine nature and sightseeing in the same day.
For those looking to enjoy the Potomac River, the Capital Crescent Trail begins in Georgetown and offers a beautiful route for walking, running, and cycling. Outdoor enthusiasts can also rent kayaks or canoes at Fletcher’s Cove, a local favorite for getting out on the water and enjoying a different perspective of the city.
Whether you’re interested in history, museums, architecture, food, nightlife, or simply exploring a beautiful and walkable city, Washington, D.C. is a destination that continues to surprise, inspire, and delight visitors from around the world.
Places to eat & drink in Washington, D.C.

Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy throughout the city.
Standout restaurants include Le Diplomate, one of Washington’s most iconic dining destinations, Lupo Verde for Italian fare, The Red Hen, and Raku, among many others.
Another insider tip and one of my favorites is a bookstore on Connecticut Ave called Politics and Prose (great kids section too) with several great food options in the same block! Don’t miss Call Your Mother for the best bagel in town.
Dining favorites at The Wharf include Del Mar by Fabio Trabocchi, Moonraker for Japanese-inspired small plates, and the rooftop at the Pendry, which offers beautiful harbor views.
