Things to do in Amsterdam

Explore Amsterdam’s museums: Amsterdam is home to some of the best museums in the world. The Van Gogh Museum takes you through the life and works of the famous artist. The Rijksmuseum showcases centuries of Dutch history and art, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Anne Frank House is a powerful experience that offers insight into World War II history and the resilience of the human spirit.

See the city from the water: A canal cruise is hands down one of the best ways to take in Amsterdam’s iconic views. Flagship Amsterdam offers a fun and informative ride. You can learn a bit of history while enjoying the city from a totally different perspective.

Stroll through historic neighborhoods: Walk through De Pijp. It is known for its lively streets and local eateries, or explore the Jordaan district, with its boutique shops, art galleries and cozy cafés. Don’t miss Begijnhof, a peaceful courtyard with historic homes dating back to the 14th century. And of course, no trip to Amsterdam is complete without at least walking through the Red Light District, a historic and unique part of the city.

Visit Amsterdam’s landmarks: Dam Square and the Royal Palace are right in the heart of Amsterdam and perfect for people-watching. The Oude Kerk, the city’s oldest church, sits in the middle of the Red Light District, making for an interesting contrast of old and new. The Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam’s famous floating flower market, is a great stop if you want to browse tulips and other blooms.

Experience the Heineken Brewery: If you’re a beer fan (or just enjoy a fun, interactive experience), the Heineken Experience is a great stop. It takes you through the history and brewing process of the iconic Dutch beer, ending with a couple of fresh pours.

Relax in Vondelpark: For a break from sightseeing, spend some time in Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most famous green space. It’s the perfect spot to take a walk, rent a bike or just relax and watch the world go by.

Places to eat & drink in Amsterdam

Ouef: A great spot to start your day with eggs benedict or French toast.

Winkel 43: The apple pie here is famous for a reason.

The Pantry – Traditional Dutch food in a cozy setting. Pro tip: make a reservation.

Vlaamse Frites: If you love fries (who doesn’t?), this is the place to go.

Moeders: A cozy Dutch restaurant known for its traditional stamppot (mashed potatoes with sausage and veggies)

Foodhallen: A buzzing indoor food market with something for everyone.

Brouwerij ’t IJ: A local brewery set next to the tallest windmill in the Netherlands. Great beer, cool setting.

Van Stapele Koekmakerij: If you love cookies, this place serves up the best warm chocolate cookies in the city.

Need to know

If you’re visiting in the spring, don’t miss Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse. With over 7 million tulips in bloom, it’s a floral wonderland. Spend a few hours walking the gardens, then rent a bike to explore the nearby flower fields.

Not visiting during tulip season? The Hague, Rotterdam and Gouda are all about an hour away by train and make for great day trips.
