Puerto Rico with Just 2 Days of PTO

Fly into San Juan and settle into your hotel in the Condado area. If your flight arrives before noon and you're feeling ambitious, you can make a trip to El Yunque National Forest for waterfalls and rainforest views. Otherwise, keep your first day intentionally relaxed and head straight to the beach.

I recommend spending the evening at Condado Beach with a casual dinner and a drink in hand while watching the sunset. On my trip, we grabbed burritos near our hotel and enjoyed fresh pineapple piña coladas from a beach vendor before walking along the shoreline. After a travel day, it was the perfect way to transition into vacation mode and start the weekend without feeling rushed.

Start the morning with a short flight from San Juan to Vieques. While many travelers consider taking the ferry, I strongly recommend flying if you're working with limited time. The flight is quick and scenic, saving hours that can be better spent enjoying the island.

After landing, pick up a rental vehicle and begin exploring. Having your own transportation gives you the flexibility to discover hidden beaches and move around the island at your own pace. In the evening, join a guided kayak tour of Mosquito Bay, widely considered the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Watching the water glow around your paddle in complete darkness feels almost unreal. Of everything I experienced on this trip, this was easily the most memorable and unique activity.

Dedicate the day to exploring Vieques' spectacular beaches. Pack snacks, sunscreen, and plenty of water, then spend the day moving between some of the island's most beautiful stretches of coastline. Playa Caracas offers soft white sand and crystal-clear water, while Playa La Chiva is excellent for snorkeling and swimming.

For a more rugged setting, visit Navío Beach, where dramatic cliffs and crashing waves create a completely different atmosphere. One of the most memorable parts of driving around Vieques is encountering the island's famous wild horses. They roam freely throughout the island and add to the feeling that you've discovered somewhere truly special.

End the day in Esperanza, where waterfront restaurants and relaxed beach bars create the perfect setting for sunset cocktails, fresh seafood, and live music.

Catch a morning flight back to San Juan and check into a hotel in Old San Juan. Staying within the historic district makes it easy to explore on foot and soak up the city's colonial charm.
Spend the afternoon wandering colorful streets lined with pastel buildings, local boutiques, and centuries-old architecture. Visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal to learn about Puerto Rico's history while enjoying incredible ocean views from the fortress walls.

For your final evening, treat yourself to one of San Juan's outstanding restaurants before heading to La Factoría for cocktails and nightlife. The bar's different rooms each offer a unique atmosphere, from intimate cocktail lounges to lively spaces where locals and visitors gather to dance salsa late into the evening.

Before heading to the airport, grab a Puerto Rican coffee and a fresh pastry from a local café. Even with just a few days on the island, you'll leave having experienced beaches, history, wildlife, adventure, and some of the best food in the Caribbean.

If your flight schedule allows, take one final stroll through Old San Juan before making your way to the airport. It's a fitting end to a long weekend that feels much longer than the number of PTO days you used.
