Day 1: A day to reset at Kyambura Gorge Lodge

Upon arriving in Uganda, you will be whisked away to Kyambura Gorge Lodge, a stunning luxury retreat perched on stilts overlooking both the Kyambura Gorge and Queen Elizabeth National Park. The gorge is famously home to the "lost chimps," a unique community of 33 primates that settled here and never moved on. To unwind after your journey, enjoy a complimentary massage before refreshing in the outdoor shower of your spacious, private banda.

Day 2: Chimp trekking through Kyambura Gorge Lodge

Set your alarms for an early start! Your day begins with a nature walk toward the gorge. Keep your eyes peeled, as you might even spot an elephant along the way. Upon arrival, trusted trackers will lead you to the "lost chimps" for an unforgettable hour observing these primates, who share 98.7% of our DNA. After an exhilarating morning, head back to the lodge for a local lunch of stewed goat and plantains before freshening up for an afternoon boat safari. Get ready for close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and plenty of elephants!

Day 3: Searching for the famous tree-climbing lions of Elizabeth National Park

After a day of trekking, rest your feet and enjoy a safari through Queen Elizabeth National Park. Alongside a local researcher, you’ll head off-road in search of the park’s famous tree-climbing lions, with chances to spot leopards, elephants, and more along the way. Following the safari, you will travel to the magical Bwindi Lodge, nestled in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Here, you can relax by the fireside as you prepare for tomorrow’s thrilling gorilla trek!

Day 4: Gorilla trekking through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The day has finally arrived—it’s time for gorilla trekking! After a quick five-minute drive to the trailhead, you’ll be welcomed by the vibrant songs and dances of the local community. From there, set off on the experience of a lifetime as you track a gorilla family through the forest. Prepare for a truly magical hour observing their natural interactions. Several families include newborns, like the 10-month-old I came across during my trek. It is so fun seeing the little one play and explore. Following your trek, you can celebrate your unforgettable day back at the lodge, sipping a signature Gorillini cocktail at the renowned Bwindi Bar.

Day 5: Chasing golden monkeys in Mgahinga National Park

After a brief one-hour flight, you'll arrive at Mgahinga National Park to begin your golden monkey trek. These playful, energetic primates are a joy to watch as they leap through the canopy. You'll then check into Mt. Gahinga Lodge, a serene retreat tucked into lush greenery with stunning mountain views. Later, take a short walk to the neighboring Batwa Village to meet the community that once shared the forest with gorillas and chimpanzees before being relocated for conservation.

Day 6: Road trip to Rwanda

Cross the border into Rwanda to visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. It’s an inspiring place to learn about the mountain gorillas Dian Fossey dedicated her life to protecting. Afterward, settle into Virunga Lodge, which boasts panoramic views of the volcanoes and shimmering lakes. Spend a relaxing afternoon on the patio with homemade lemonade, and don’t forget to wake up early for a spectacular sunrise over the water. Not far from Virunga lodge lie One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Singita Kwitonda, and Wilderness Bisate. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, any of these lodges will fit the bill!

Day 7: All good things must come to an end

Your final day is yours to customize. Opt for one last gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park, or choose to unwind and enjoy the amenities at your lodge’s spa. From coffee and tea tastings to guided nature walks, there are plenty of ways to soak in your final moments in Rwanda.
