Straddling Europe and Asia, Istanbul is a collision of flavors, cultures, and centuries-old traditions. From sizzling kebabs on bustling side streets to elegant Ottoman-era desserts, every bite tells a story. Yes, the Hagia Sophia will take your breath away—but the city’s true heartbeat is in its food.

Things to do in Istanbul

Tour the Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque
These two architectural marvels are must-sees in Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia, once a Byzantine church and later an Ottoman mosque, is a breathtaking blend of Christian and Islamic artistry. Just across the square, the Blue Mosque impresses with its cascading domes, elegant minarets, and stunning blue-tiled interior. For the best experience, book a guided tour with skip-the-line access to both mosques. You’ll not only save time but also gain fascinating insights you’d miss on your own.
Visit the Topkapi Palace Museum
Perched above the Bosphorus, Topkapi Palace was once the opulent home of Ottoman sultans—and it’s absolutely worth exploring. Inside, you’ll find lavish courtyards, intricate tilework, and a treasury of fascinating artifacts. I recommend skipping the audio guide and just taking your time wandering through the different pavilions and chambers—the beauty and history speak for themselves.
Wander around Galata
Cross the Golden Horn and head up to Galata, a historic neighborhood with a vibrant, artsy vibe. Stroll its winding streets lined with stylish cafés, boutique shops, and local art galleries.
Venture over to Ortaköy
Hop on a ferry up the Bosphorus to Ortaköy, a lively waterfront neighborhood famous for its postcard-perfect mosque framed by the bridge. Time your visit for sunset—the golden light reflecting off the water and the mosque’s intricate tiles is unforgettable. After soaking in the views, grab dinner and drinks at one of the many restaurants overlooking the Bosphorus.
Places to eat & drink in Istanbul

Cafe Privato
In the heart of Galata, this cozy café is the perfect spot for a traditional Turkish breakfast. Grab a table outside and order the full spread—think fresh cheeses, olives, fluffy simit, eggs, jams, and honey with clotted cream. Pair it with strong Turkish tea for the ultimate start to your day.
Dönerci Şahin Usta
Just steps from the Grand Bazaar, this legendary spot serves some of the best döner in Istanbul. Order a juicy kebab wrapped in fresh flatbread, and don’t skip the refreshing homemade ayran (a tangy yogurt drink) to wash it down. Simple, classic, and absolutely delicious.
Hocapaşa Pidecisi
Pide is a must-try in Istanbul, and this no-frills spot is one of the best places to have it. Often called “Turkish pizza,” pide is a boat-shaped flatbread topped with spiced ground meat, gooey cheese, and sometimes an egg for extra richness. Simple, satisfying, and full of flavor.
Karakoy Fish Wrap
Don’t overlook this humble street food—it was my favorite dish I ate in Istanbul. Fish sandwiches are a beloved staple along the Golden Horn, and the ones at this stand are legendary. Each wrap is made with care: perfectly grilled fresh fish, seasoned to perfection, tucked into warm bread with veggies. Simple, flavorful, and unforgettable.
1932 Cihangir Doyum Mantı
Think ravioli, but make it Turkish—and even better. Mantı are tiny dumplings, and at this spot, they’re fried to crispy perfection, then tossed in tangy yogurt sauce and sprinkled with fragrant spices. It’s rich, indulgent, and absolutely worth seeking out.
Pandeli Restaurant
For a classic Turkish dining experience, Pandeli is a must. This historic restaurant—once visited by icons like Audrey Hepburn and Queen Elizabeth—offers an elegant setting with blue-tiled walls and views of the Golden Horn. Be sure to book a reservation and don’t miss their signature dish, Hünkar Beğendi (Sultan’s Delight), a rich lamb stew served over smoky eggplant purée.
Banyan Restaurant
Need a break from classic Turkish fare? Head to Banyan in Ortaköy for a stylish dinner with a view. Perched on a rooftop overlooking the Bosphorus, this upscale spot pairs creative Asian-fusion dishes—like beef katsu sushi with truffle—with expertly crafted cocktails. Come for the food, stay for the breathtaking sunset backdrop.
Karaköy Güllüoğlu or Hafız Mustafa 1864
You can’t leave Istanbul without indulging in baklava, and these two legendary spots set the standard. Karaköy Güllüoğlu is famous for its delicate, buttery layers and pistachio-packed flavors, while Hafız Mustafa 1864 serves an equally irresistible selection in a historic setting. With so many varieties—walnut, pistachio, chocolate—you might find yourself coming back night after night.

Tips for navigating Istanbul smartly & safely
Dress respectfully and carry a scarf: When visiting mosques, women are required to cover their heads and shoulders, and both men and women must cover their legs. Pants are the safest bet, and carrying a lightweight scarf is essential. If you forget, don’t worry—vendors sell cheap scarves nearby, and some mosques offer them for free.
Skip the taxis: Taxis in Istanbul often overcharge tourists, so it’s best to avoid them. Instead, take advantage of the city’s public transportation, including trams, metro lines, and ferries. You can try Uber, but be prepared for longer wait times.
