Curator’s statement
I visited Newport for the first time after years of dreaming of it. I love all things old, so touring the historic homes and vintage stores was right up my alley. But the city is far from stuffy. Check out the funky side, including craft breweries, surf shops, and the like.

Things to do in Newport, Rhode Island

The Breakers
It's impossible to visit without touring at least one of the Newport Mansions. Some are only open seasonally, so check before you go. The Breakers and Marble House, both owned by the Vanderbilts, are the easiest to visit together with a combination ticket, but there are nine in total. The gift shops have replicas of items from the homes.
The Cliff Walk is a beloved Newport tradition that takes visitors along the shore past the famous mansions, including ones not open to the public. The route takes around an hour from north to south, from Easton Beach to Bailey Beach.
Fort Adams State Park hosts the famed Newport Folk Festival, which, since 1959, has welcomed acts like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and BB King. The park has walking trails and a pier where you can hop aboard a charter boat.
Speaking of boats, sailing is an important part of the Newport experience. Hop aboard a vintage yacht to see how the other half lives. Sunset is the best time to take in the city from the water.
Of course, the theme of this guide is shopping at Newport's abundant antique stores. Each has something different, but expect nautical items and the like. Aardvark Antiques, Atlantic Attic, Newport Antiques & Treasures, and Leeside Antiques are among the best.
Places to eat & drink in Newport, Rhode Island

Clam chowder at The Black Pearl
Start the day at Nitro Bar, a trendy coffee shop with several locations in Newport and Providence. Try the house-made pastries and breakfast sandwiches, and, of course, get your caffeine fix.
The White Horse Tavern is considered to be the oldest tavern in the United States, built in 1673. Make a reservation to enjoy the raw bar and classics like steak frites and beef Wellington.
If you can't get in, The Black Pearl is a great alternative for a cozy meal by the fire. The clam chowder is an essential order, but so are the scallops.
Wally’s Wieners is a casual lunch spot that has gone viral for its funky hot dogs and espresso martinis. You can also go for breakfast or head to the speakeasy.
Rejects Beer Co. is a laid-back waterfront brewery across the bridge in Middletown. Come for a pint, paired with live music and movie screenings.
