Curator’s statement
Madrid is the capital of Spain and the first city I fell in love with in the country. It has its own unique character and, much like New York City, it never sleeps. I have visited there often and I have several spots that I recommend. These places are girls' trip friendly as well as solo travel approved by me. However you choose to travel to this grand city, it won’t disappoint.

Things to do in Madrid

El Retiro Park
Museo de la Reina Sofia: One of Madrid’s most famous art museums that holds Picasso’s controversial work, Guernica. Visit in the evening for reduced-cost ticket options.
Palacio Real de Madrid: If you didn’t know, Spain indeed has a royal family and you can visit one of their stunning residences, the Palacio Real de Madrid.
Plaza Mayor: The main plaza in the city center; here you can find many cafés and restaurants or have a small aperitif on one of the many terraces.
Puerta del Sol: This massive plaza has many shops and is also the site of many concerts and events in the city.
El Retiro Park: This gorgeous park is massive and is perfect to visit any time of the year. It’s a nice escape from the big-city landscape surrounding you. If you want, you can even take a boat out on the lake in the middle of the park.
El Rastro Sunday outdoor market: This market has more than just vendors selling vintage goods; some of my favorite dresses and other unique items have been found at this one-of-a-kind market in the city. Even if you don’t want to shop, it’s worth it to look!
Templo de Debod: This outdoor park area is different from other architecture in the city yet is very stunning. It is a perfect place to watch the sunset over the city.
Sala Equis: If you’re in the mood, this cinema-style bar is a great place to start your night. They play several films as well throughout the year, so check the schedule and see what they have to offer.
Places to eat & drink in Madrid

Federal Cafe Madrid: A more traditional brunch spot in the city that will fill you with good coffee and food to prepare you for your day.
Chocolatería San Ginés: Even if you never have Spanish churros and chocolate anywhere else, you have to try them here at San Ginés. This famous spot has been around since 1894 and is conveniently located next to Puerta del Sol. It’s the perfect food to start your day with.
Mercado de San Miguel: Like most cities in Spain, Madrid has a large central market with many food options to enjoy. If you want to try a little bit of everything in Spanish gastronomy, I recommend this market.
Alimentación Quiroga: A dining spot from 1958 offering local specialties, tapas, and more.
Casa Labra: Another excellent tapas bar with a casual atmosphere.
Cervecería La Campana: If you are looking for a quick bite to eat for a low price, this is your place! They have great bocadillos (small sandwiches) for you to choose from.
Need to know
Madrid has an excellent metro and bus system that can be navigated easily using apps like Google Maps or Moovit.
