Advisor - Skip The Chaos: San José del Cabo, A More Authentic Cabo Experience
Curator’s statement

It is without a doubt that San José del Cabo has my heart over Cabo San Lucas. It offers a completely different side of Los Cabos: one that feels quieter, more authentic, and deeply connected to the local culture. With its charming historic center, thriving art scene, boutique hotels, and slower pace, it feels far more refined and relaxed than neighboring Cabo San Lucas. The overall atmosphere is upscale yet understated, attracting travelers looking for meaningful experiences, beautiful design, incredible dining with ingredients sourced from the peninsula, and a more family-oriented environment. It’s the kind of destination where you truly feel immersed and connected, and a place we find ourselves returning to time and time again.

Things to do in San José del Cabo, Mexico

Thursday night Art Walk

An absolute must if you’re in town on a Thursday evening. Start the night wandering through the charming streets of San José del Cabo’s Art District, where local galleries, artisan vendors, and live music bring the town to life. Grab a fresh churro or tamales from one of the street stands, browse the incredible local artwork, then settle into dinner at one of the many restaurants downtown. The entire area feels vibrant and alive with galleries, boutiques, and vendors staying open late into the evening.

Palmilla Beach day

The best beach days in Los Cabos are spent at one of the few swimmable beaches in the Los Cabos corridor: Palmilla Beach shares its stunning stretch of sand with the iconic One&Only Palmilla hotel. It’s swimmable turquoise water and a more relaxed atmosphere make it especially ideal for families. Umbrellas are typically available to rent for around 200 MXN, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon relaxing by the water.

Horseback riding with Rancho Animas

For a true Baja experience, horseback riding with Rancho Animas is unforgettable. Their custom trails wind through the mountains, desert landscapes, and the San José estuary, offering a side of Los Cabos many travelers never see. The horses are exceptionally well-trained and suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. Tip: Request a ride at sunset for the best views.

Mezcal tasting at Colibrí

If you appreciate the craft behind mezcal like me, a tasting experience at Colibrí at Acre is a must. Set within the property’s beautifully designed mezcal tasting room, guests are guided through a curated tasting of four house mezcals while learning about the history, traditions, and artistry behind the spirit. The experience goes far beyond simply tasting, offering insight into the production process, regional differences, and deep cultural significance of mezcal throughout Mexico. Whether you’re already a mezcal lover or completely new to it, you’ll leave with an entirely new appreciation for the craftsmanship and heritage behind every pour.

Organic wine and cheese pairing at Casa Don Rodrigo

For a truly under-the-radar experience—and a welcome break from the Cabo heat—head to Casa Don Rodrigo, a historic family home turned restaurant that is still owned and proudly operated by the same family today. Learn about the family’s history, deeply rooted in cattle ranching and agriculture, while enjoying a wine and cheese tasting inside what was once one of the home’s original bedrooms. Sip a variety of Mexican wines paired with artisanal housemade cheeses made from the family’s own herd of organic cows (including some of the best blue cheese I’ve personally ever had). Authentic, intimate, and wonderfully laid-back.

Extra: Day trip to Balandra Bay

If time allows, a day trip to Balandra Bay is absolutely worth considering. Often regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, Balandra is a protected area known for its shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water, rich marine wildlife, and stunning natural scenery. It’s important to note that this is a full-day excursion, with approximately 2–2.5 hours of driving each way from San José del Cabo, but for many travelers, the experience is more than worth the journey.

Places to eat & drink in San José del Cabo, Mexico

Braised short rib table preparation at CARBÓNCABRÓN by chef Poncho Cadena

Acre Restaurant ($$$)

A longtime favorite for its lush jungle setting, farm-to-table cuisine, and effortlessly cool atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping in for brunch, sunset cocktails, or dinner beneath the trees, it’s the kind of place that keeps calling you back. And don’t even get me started on the housemade cheddar biscuits with honey butter—truly the stuff dreams are made of. Bonus: Endless Instagram-worthy spots throughout the property, and donkeys and goats to pet for the animal-lover.

CARBÓNCABRÓN ($$$)

For those who appreciate the robust flavors of smoke and charcoal, look no further. Known for its dramatic open-fire cooking displays and fresh farm and organic ingredients, where charcoal serves as the main ingredient in the cooking techniques. To create a truly unique and secluded dining space, each table is nestled privately among stacks of chopped wood, creating a truly unique, slow-dining, and romantic setting. It offers a vibrant energy and exquisite food presentation, and outstanding cocktails, making it an ideal choice for a memorable evening perfect for a date night or group dinner.

Come e Casa ($$)

This intimate Italian spot quickly became a must-visit for us when in Los Cabos; in fact, we ended up dining here twice during our last stay. Known for its homemade pastas, cozy ambiance, wood-fired pizza oven, and slower-paced dining experience, it feels like dinner at a friend’s home… but make it Cabo chic. Standout dishes included the braised short-rib pappardelle, and the spaghetti con vongole with Baja clams was absolutely not to be missed.

La Lupita Taco & Mezcal ($$)

A long-standing staple in downtown San José del Cabo, known for its gourmet tacos, lively mezcal bar, and incredible atmosphere. The energy here is always buzzing, with live music, creative taco combinations, an extensive mezcal selection, and cocktails that are strong—and I mean strong. A perfect casual dinner spot with some of the best tacos in town, all served on fresh handmade tortillas pressed right on the spot.

Ruba’s Bakery ($$)

For the slower mornings, try this charming local bakery located in a restored 1940s house. Known for their abundance of fresh pastries, breakfast items, and a selection of Mexican specialty coffees. This is an easygoing atmosphere loved by both locals and returning visitors. Try their specialty french toast, or their chilaquiles (+ add birria) enough to split for two!

El Marinero Borracho (The Drunken Sailor) ($)

A hidden gem tucked away in the Puerto Los Cabos marina, known for ultra-fresh seafood in a laid-back local setting. Expect flavorful ceviches, Baja-style fish and shrimp tacos, grilled catch-of-the-day specials, and a more authentic, under-the-radar dining experience away from the typical tourist scene. Bonus: if you’ve been out fishing for the day, they’ll even cook your fresh catch for you.

Las Guacamayas ($)

A beloved authentic Mexican cuisine spot known for its authentic flavors, generous portions, massive molcajete bowls, fishbowl margaritas, and lively late-night energy. The perfect casual stop for a quick but delicious meal after exploring town, with the kind of laid-back atmosphere that keeps both locals and visitors coming back.

Los Tres Gallos ($$)

Traditional Mexican cuisine served in a beautiful courtyard setting with warm hospitality and classic regional dishes. A wonderful choice for travelers looking for a more traditional and atmospheric dinner experience while exploring downtown San José del Cabo. You’ll know you’ve found it when you spot the iconic neon “Margaritas To Go” sign glowing out front.

Clandestinna

A hidden speakeasy-style cocktail bar tucked into the art district of downtown San José del Cabo, known for its moody atmosphere, mixology cocktails, and intimate late-night energy. Expect inventive drinks, dim lighting, eclectic design details, and a more elevated nightlife experience that feels effortlessly cool and under the radar.

Silvestre Mezcaleria

A mezcal-forward cocktail bar celebrating the spirit and culture of Mexico through curated tastings, artisanal cocktails, and a stylish artsy setting. The atmosphere feels relaxed yet sophisticated, making it a great stop for sipping small-batch mezcals and lingering over conversation late into the evening.

Nomade

One of the liveliest nightlife spots in downtown San José del Cabo, known for its energetic atmosphere, DJs, creative cocktails, and open-air vibe. A fun late-night option for those wanting a more upbeat scene while still maintaining that artsy, Baja-cool aesthetic, right in the mix.

Bar Búho at Suelo Sur

An elevated cocktail experience with a 360 bar set underneath a 200-year old tree with modern grounds and great craft cocktails. Perfect for sunset drinks or a night cap, this is a truly unique setting with expert mixologists, and warm, inviting vibes. The best part is that this venue hosts several spaces, including a beer-garden open on Sundays, and a large space, making this the perfect spot enjoyable for both adults, and kids.

Need to know

The wet season occurs during August and September; travelers should plan accordingly as it tends to be quiet and numerous businesses and restaurants close for the season.
