Things to do in Istanbul

Grand Bazaar Rooftop
I recommend anchoring your stay in a beautiful hotel on the Bosphorus, like the Ciragan Palace Kempinski or the Peninsula Hotel. The Ciragan Palace Kempinski was once an imperial palace, and the architecture of this iconic property is a true reflection of historical Turkey—it’s one of a kind. I also highly recommend the luxurious Peninsula Hotel, a modern option blending Turkish historical buildings and design elements with sexy and sleek accents.
To make exploring seamless, organize your days by area. For a four-day visit, focus your time on imperial sites, the historic old town, modern districts, and a day along the Bosphorus ending with dinner in Bebek. I highly recommend a curated and experienced local guide, and I can provide recommendations.
Cultural & historical highlights
Take in the Roman Hippodrome and stunning Blue Mosque
Explore the ancient chariot-race grounds before stepping inside the stunning 17th-century Blue Mosque. Its domes, stained glass (gifted by a pope!), and hand-painted Iznik tiles glow with vibrant blue hues.Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya)
Built in 537 AD, this is a breathtaking symbol of Istanbul’s layered past. Originally a church and later a mosque, it’s massive dome and mix of Christian mosaics and Islamic calligraphy, reflecting centuries of empire and faith under one roof.Basilica Cistern
This sixth-century underground reservoir is an engineering feat that once supplied water to the Byzantine Empire. This sounds largely functional, but the over 300 columns, arranged in 12 rows with colorful illumination, also create a beautiful effect.
Truly unique exploration
Explore the Grand Bazaar
Stroll through one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, featuring over 4,000 shops. While you may imagine this as a dark, old, crowded market, much of it is modernized. From spices to jewelry to knock-off designer bags, it’s here. I recommend experiencing the bazaar from the rooftops—such a unique thrill.Dolmabahçe Palace
Wow—this opulent palace is unlike any you’ve seen. An opulent display of Baroque, Rococo, and Ottoman architecture symbolizing the 19th-century modernization of the empire. It was fascinating to see receiving rooms and harem quarters.
Places to eat & drink in Istanbul

Dining at Gallada
Lokanta 1741: A unique terrace dining experience near the historic 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamam. Featuring wonderful mezes, delicious beef, and handmade deserts, all expertly and beautifully prepared. The service at Lokanta 1741 was outstanding.
Liman Restaurant: Well-situated along the Bosphorus at Galataport, serving modern and beautiful Turkish cuisine. I loved their Muhammara (Acuka), a red pepper walnut meze dish, and their addictive salma. The full menu beautifully showcases a breadth of dishes, from paella to local fish.
Gallada Restaurant: A contemporary hot spot within the Peninsula hotel, helmed by a Michelin-starred chef, blending modern Turkish Asian flavors with panoramic views. This is a must-try experience!
Tuğra Restaurant, at the Ciragan Palace Kempinski: Dine in a renovated sultan’s palace along the Bosphorus. Reserve a table outside with water views or inside the stunning and ornate palace building. Experience a variety of Turkish mezes, local fish, beef sirloin, and Turkish delights.
Need to know
For women: While visiting religious sites, remember to bring a shawl, scarf, or light wrap to cover your head.
While visiting the Blue Mosque, visitors are asked to remove their shoes. Insider tip: Bring a small bag to put your shoes in while you walk around inside so you don't lose track of them.
Hire a Fora-recommended guide to explore hidden gems, like handmade Turkish rug shops, spice markets, and establishments for the best Turkish coffee.
