Advisor - A Week Exploring São Miguel
Curator’s statement

São Miguel in the Azores is special to me not only for its breathtaking coastal views, lush gardens, and vibrant flowers, but also for the incredible seafood, local wines, and unforgettable culinary experiences. The impeccable service and genuine hospitality made us feel instantly welcome and safe, with romantic cobblestone streets over looking the coast. The island’s peaceful atmosphere, scenic hikes, and stunning waterfalls made the experience both meaningful and unforgettable. Although we didn’t island hop, many locals shared how easy it is to visit nearby islands like Terceira, Faial, and Pico, inspiring us to return one day and explore even more of the Azores.

Where to stay

Unlock perks by contacting Haley Rego to book your trip.

Days 1–2: Discovering Ponta Delgada

Begin your São Miguel adventure in Ponta Delgada, where most international flights arrive. Spend your first two days exploring the charming historic center, visiting Portas da Cidade, Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, and strolling along the marina. Enjoy fresh seafood dinners paired with Azorean wine, and consider a whale-watching tour or a visit to a local pineapple plantation for something uniquely island-grown.

Insider tip: Rent a car early—it gives you flexibility for scenic coastal drives and spontaneous stops at viewpoints along the way.

Be sure to plan dinner at Tasca—recognized by The New York Times as one of the best restaurants on the island—where there are no reservations and lines form early, so arrive ahead of opening to avoid a long wait; the food is absolutely unforgettable and worth it.

Days 3–6: Relaxing & rejuvenating in Furnas

Head east to Furnas and check into the iconic Terra Nostra Garden Hotel for an unforgettable stay. The botanical gardens are breathtaking, and guests have exclusive access to the thermal pool and hot springs at any hour—an especially magical experience in the early morning or late evening.

Spend your days hiking around Furnas Lake, soaking in geothermal springs, and trying the famous cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew slow-cooked underground by volcanic heat. The service and dining at Terra Nostra are truly five-star, making it both a restorative and indulgent retreat.

Days 7–9: Exploring the wild beauty of the west

Finish your trip on the west side of the island, where dramatic landscapes await at Sete Cidades. Walk along the crater rim for sweeping views of the twin lakes, and stop by the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel for a striking (and photogenic) contrast to the natural scenery. Spend your days hiking through lush forests, discovering hidden viewpoints, and dining at cozy local restaurants that highlight fresh island ingredients. This part of São Miguel feels raw and untouched—perfect for slowing down, immersing yourself in nature, and ending your journey on a breathtaking note.

Need to know

  • Rent a car: Public transportation is limited, and having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore remote viewpoints and hidden gems. As a travel advisor, I can arrange your rental with trusted local providers to ensure competitive pricing, reliable service, and a seamless pickup experience.

  • Dining etiquette: In Portugal, servers will not automatically bring the check—you must ask for it when you are ready. It’s part of the relaxed dining culture, so don’t feel rushed.

  • Public conduct: Be aware that playing cards in public spaces is restricted under local regulations, so it’s best to avoid card games in parks or public squares.

  • Pack layers and a rain jacket: The weather can change quickly, especially during the wetter months from October through March, when rain showers and mist are more frequent. It’s common to experience sunshine, clouds, and rain all in one day.

  • Bring a dark-colored swimsuit for Furnas: The iron-rich thermal waters can stain light fabrics.

  • Book Terra Nostra in advance: It’s a sought-after property, particularly from late spring through early fall.

  • Plan for slower travel: The island pace is relaxed—allow time for spontaneous scenic stops, long meals, and fully enjoying the landscape.
