Advisor - Brazil in Full Color: A Traveler's Guide
Curator’s statement

Brazil is one of those rare places that really has it all—incredible landscapes, rich culture, amazing food, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. Whether you’re feeling the energy of Rio, relaxing on the beach of Ipanema, or exploring the wild beauty of Iguazu Falls, Brazil leaves a lasting impression. What makes it so special is the variety. You can go from sipping coconut water on the beach to hiking through the jungle, or from wandering through colonial towns to dancing at a street festival—all on the same trip. Every region has its own personality, its own flavors, its own rhythm.

Things to do in Rio de Janeiro

  • Go beach-hopping at two of Rio’s best: Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. These are neighboring world-famous beaches in Rio de Janeiro separated by a short distance, offering distinct experiences: Copacabana Beach is known for its classic, bustling atmosphere, while Ipanema Beach is a chic, affluent, and cultural hub with stunning mountain views.

  • Experience Lapa’s nightlife: Known for its authentic and vibrant street parties, filled with people, music, and a distinct bohemian atmosphere that has existed since the 19th century. Here you’ll find a wide range of options, including pubs, bars, and nightclubs playing different styles of music, from Brazilian Funk and electronic to traditional Pagode.

  • Highlights of Rio de Janeiro: Spend the day checking off these must-do activities, which include seeing the iconic Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and exploring the vibrant art of the Escadaria Selarón.

  • Rio aerial views: Handglide over Rio’s diverse landscape, including the dense Tijuca Forest, the ocean, iconic beaches like Ipanema, and the city’s mountainous terrain. A stunning panoramic view from above.

  • Favela guided tour: Get an in-depth local experience with a walking tour of one of Rio’s “favelas.” Follow your resident guide through the slum to get an insider’s perspective on daily life and learn about the challenges these communities face. A tour guide is needed for this experience.

Day Trips

  • Book a charter plane and head off to the iconic Iguazu Falls. An awe-inspiring natural wonder located within the Iguaçu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Rent a car or book yourself a driver for the day and visit some of Rio’s symbolic institutions such as Monasterio de San Benito, Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura, Aqua Rio, Metropolitan Cathedral of St Sebastian, and Museum of Tomorrow.

Places to eat & drink in Rio de Janeiro

  • Cafeteria Colombo: An iconic café blending European elegance with Brazilian charm. Everything is good here, but if you’re short on time and unable to stay, get yourself a cup of coffee and their macaroons.

  • Rafain Churrascaria Dinner & Show: Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring over 200 gourmet dishes—from traditional Brazilian barbecue meats and international cuisine to salads, pastas, seafood, and desserts.

  • Aprazivel: Nestled in the hillside district of Santa Teresa, the menu reflects the soul of Brazil through roots-based cooking, showcasing dishes like moqueca (fish stew), hearts-of-palm, Amazonian fish, and coconut rice, as well as steaks and chops.

  • Gino Restaurant: Located inside the Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, this Italian Mediterranean spot offers pizzas, pastas, and a cozy ambiance. Pro Tip must order: Gino’s Little Mix drink consisting of lillet, tonic, lychee reduction, mint & fruit, and the Diavola Pizza. You’ll be thanking me later.

  • Café do Alto: Focused on Northeastern Brazilian flavors, the menu features standout dishes like bobó de camarão, arrumadinho, escondidinho, Rubacão, and arroz de Hauça — plus inventive tapioca pancakes with a range of sweet and savory fillings. On weekends and holidays, their rodízio-style breakfast/brunch is a local favorite, offering a buffet of traditional bites such as mini tapiocas, cakes, feijoada, and coconut-based fare.

  • Satyriou: A high-end Italian-Mediterranean cuisine in Rio. The restaurant specializes in dishes crafted around the freshest seafood—oysters, king crab, shrimp, octopus, and fish. Their menu includes standout specialties such as spaghetti with clams, giant shrimp risotto with burrata and salmon roe, rock-salt—crusted whole fish, and scallop gratin.

  • Armazem Sao Joaquim: Housed in a beautifully restored 1854 two-story townhouse overlooking Largo do Guimarães-the bohemian heart of Santa Teresa-Armazém São Joaquim combines Brazil’s architectural legacy with modern flair. The menu reflects a multicultural fusion, drawing on Brazilian, Argentine, and French influences—from feijoada and tapas-style barbecue to grilled fish and creative regional dishes. I had the best feijoada here!

  • Marine Resto: It’s ideal for romantic dinners, leisurely family meals, or special occasions. Pro Tip: order the octopus in roasted garlic with creamy yellow potato purée with tonka bean, lime, broccoli, and roasted red onion.

Need to know

  • Portuguese is the main language. While English is spoken in tourist zones, it’s helpful to learn a few phrases or use a translation app.

  • Pre-booked transfers are highly recommended from Galeão or Santos Dumont Airports.
