Things to do in Tucson

Inside San Xavier del Bac Mission, completed in 1797.
Hike in Saguaro National Park: This national park is divided into two districts: Tucson Mountain District to the west and Rincon Mountain District to the east. It covers over 92,000 acres and contains more than 2 million saguaro cacti. Many hiking trails of varying length and difficulty are scattered throughout the park, and paved scenic drives are accessible during the park’s open hours.
Visit the Tucson Botanical Gardens: Voted one of the best in the US, the Tucson Botanical Gardens include rotating seasonal classes, events, and exhibits suitable for all ages. The 5.5 acre garden is open year round and is the perfect spot to spend a morning or a whole day, appreciating the tranquil oasis cultivated in the heart of Tucson’s busy midtown over the better part of the last century.
Shop Local: Many small shops can be found across Tucson selling authentic Southwestern and Native American goods. Support local businesses by purchasing art that embodies the rich culture and heritage of the American Southwest.
Tour the San Xavier del Bac Mission: On the south end of Tucson, just minutes from I-19 lies San Xavier del Bac Mission, a landmark Spanish Catholic church completed in 1797. Today, the mission stands as an extraordinary icon of Spanish colonial history and architecture. Daily mass services are offered, as the mission is an active parish, and it is easily accessible and free to visit throughout the week as well.
Enjoy the Sunset: The western US is known for its captivating desert sunsets, and Tucson is no exception! The city has many popular viewpoints to watch the sun go down. Plan ahead and scope out the perfect viewing spot to enjoy after a busy day enjoying all that Tucson has to offer.

Fruit Shack Smoothies: Craving something sweet? Stop by Fruit Shack Smoothies at Oro Valley for a fruity frozen treat. They have a wide selection of acai bowls and smoothies to satisfy any preference, plus some wellness shot options for those inclined. And if you’re a pina colada devotee, their Alotta Colada smoothie is fabulous!
Exo Roast Co: Locally owned coffee shops abound in Tucson’s vibrant downtown, and Exo Roast Co. sits atop many a local list of favorites. Sip a seasonal latte while appreciating the vintage industrial ambiance indoors, or enjoy the weather in the cooler months from their patio seating.
El Charro Cafe: If you’re craving authentic Mexican cuisine, the options are vast. Locals recommend El Charro Cafe, which has been in continuous operation since 1922, the longest of any family owned Mexican restaurant in the US. Credited with inventing the chimichanga, El Charro is a local icon, and a stop at any of their several locations across town is a true southwestern culinary and cultural experience.
Seis Kitchen: Once a humble food truck, Seis Kitchen is now a 4-location local favorite serving up sustainably sourced artisan Mexican street food. Their menu celebrates the six culinary regions of Mexico.
In-n-Out: I would be remiss if I omitted the affordable regional chain that all western state natives swear by--if you’re unfamiliar with the very popular West Coast burger chain In-n-Out, a stop at one of their locations in Tucson will be well worth your time, in particular if you’re traveling with littles or trying to stretch your dollar. Ask for your fries animal style and savor a burger with their signature spread.
Need to know
Tucson is as family-friendly a destination as they come, and is truly a gem of the Southwest. It’s the perfect destination for a long weekend or southwest road trip. Tucson and the surrounding area is particularly enjoyable in winter, when its milder temperatures offer a respite from the cold.
