Things to do in Portland, Oregon

Portland has so much to offer. A few of my favorite things to do in Portland include visiting Powell's City of Books, exploring the International Rose Test Garden, hiking in Forest Park, visiting the Portland Art Museum, and checking out the incredible food scene.

Powell's City of Books is a must-visit if, like me, you love to roam the aisles of a bookstore. Known to be the largest independent book store in the world, you can find anything in this glorious book heaven!

If you're in Portland in June, be sure to check out the nearly 650 varieties of roses in full bloom at the International Rose Test Garden. Fun fact, during the first World War hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland's garden for testing and cultivation. Truly international!

The Portland Japanese Garden is another great place to immerse yourself not only in nature but also in Japanese culture. Keep track of cherry blossom season for an extra special spectacle for the senses!

I love to get in passive exercise when I travel. Hiking does the trick for me! Forest Park is perfect for a leisurely hike or jog. At 5200 acres, it is one of the largest urban forests in the US. Nature is so embedded in the culture of Portland and Forest Park is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the area.

A museum visit is a must in my book. The Portland Art Museum houses an impressive collection of art native to the region as well as modern art and photography from artists around the world. Currently, they are in the process of a major expansion which will only enhance this already rich cultural institution.

The Oregon Center for Contemporary Art is another great space to view art. Focusing on local artists, this is good for a deep dive into Oregon´s unique art scene.

The Kiriko Shop is a special place filled with handmade clothing and accessories made from vintage Japanese textiles. This space is beautiful and peaceful and I dare you not to take something home from here.

Pioneer Courthouse Square is a place you will likely stumble upon as you make your way around the city. Dubbed Portland's living room, this is a great place to take a break and watch the city go by.

For a bit of mystery and history, check out Portland's Chinatown district, once the city center of Portland.

See Portland from a different perspective by taking a boat tour along the Willamette River. Glide along the river and take in the skyline views and bridges along the way.

Places to eat & drink in Portland, Oregon

Front windows of a coffee shop read "Stumptown"

Tusk: I love the cool vibe of Tusk. In addition, their menu of middle eastern cuisine and buzzy cocktails make for a great experience.

Bollywood Theater: I love this place. Fun and casual with amazing Indian food. Great place to have lunch as you wander SE Division street.

Coffee and Portland go hand in hand. The volume of GREAT coffee shops is unreal; you could do a whole trip just based on a coffee crawl.

  • Proud Mary: They roast their own and offer a delightful brunch. Make a reservation!

  • Coava Coffee Roasters: Gorgeous space and excellent coffee.

  • Case Study Coffee: Love this place. Love the coffee. I bought the mug. Enough said.

  • Stumptown Coffee: The OG. Go so you can say you went. Stay for the liquid gold and excellent knowledge from the baristas.
