Advisor - Your Ultimate Guide to Puerto Rico
Curator’s statement

Puerto Rico is a true gem of the Caribbean. It’s home to my parents and holds so many special memories for me personally. I spent many summers there growing up. It’s one of those rare destinations that beautifully blends culture, nature, and stunning beaches, all without needing a passport, which makes it incredibly convenient for U.S. travelers. From the colorful streets of Old San Juan to the lush rainforest waterfalls of El Yunque, and even the iconic sound of the island’s native coquí frog, every moment feels rich and immersive. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach escape or an adventure-filled getaway, Puerto Rico truly offers something for everyone.

Things to do in Puerto Rico

Snorkeling Flamenco Beach with sea turtles

  • Explore Old San Juan: Wander through cobblestone streets lined with colorful Spanish colonial buildings, great boutique shops, and historic old forts. It’s one of the most charming and photogenic areas in the Caribbean.

  • Visit El Yunque National Forest: Hike through the rainforest trails to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. It’s the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system and feels like a completely different world.

  • Experience a bioluminescent bay: Kayak at night in places like Vieques or Fajardo, where the water glows with every movement. It’s one of the most magical and unique experiences you can have.

  • Relax at Flamenco Beach (Culebra): This spot is known for its soft white sand and crystal-clear water. Stunning beach. Perfect for a day trip and an easy ferry boat ride to the island.

  • Go snorkeling or diving: Same spot, Culebra and Vieques, great for amazing underwater visibility. I recommend snorkeling with the sea turtles.

  • Visit the west coast side of the island: This side for sure has the best beaches and is less crowded. My favorite “crash boat beach”

  • Caves of Camuy: Located in Camuy, Puerto Rico. 1 hour and 20 minutes west of SJU. Take a guided tour—worth it!

Places to eat & drink in Puerto Rico

"Bucket" size cocktails

  • Playa Papaya: Located right on Avenue Isla Verde. Good breakfast spot.

  • Mi Casita: Best mofongo (island specialty) in the Isla Verde area. Go early! The place is small and packs up quickly.

  • Alambique: Located right off Isla Verde beach. Great seafood options. Easy takeaway cocktails.

  • Royal Sonesta Beachfront Lounge Akua Bar: Located right on Isla Verde beach, this lounge has fun cocktails. They offer “bucket” size cocktails for $25 each and they’re strong! Pictured above.

  • Barrachina: In Old San Juan. They are known for the best piña coladas, and rightfully so. It is the best on the island!

  • Senor Paleta: Also located in Old San Juan. Frozen fresh fruit popsicles and dessert. Awesome on a hot day. So many flavors to choose from.

  • Cayo Caribe: Old San Juan. The ceviche, fish tacos, and mojitos—yummy. All the seafood here is good.

  • La Casita: Good rum tasting flight.

Need to know

  • Best time to visit: December–April (dry season, but also the busiest)

  • Rainforest weather: Expect quick rain showers in El Yunque—it’s all part of the experience.

  • Getting around: Rent a car if you plan to explore beyond San Juan.

  • Language: Spanish is the primary language, but English is widely spoken.

  • Pace of life: Service can be slow—locals live on “island time.” You’ll often hear the word tranquilo, meaning calm and relaxed. Embrace the slower pace, and plan your excursions and reservations earlier in the day to make the most of your time.
