Things to do in Phoenix, AZ

Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and studio, Taliesin West

  • Taliesin West: Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and studio is a must-see for visitors to the greater Phoenix area. Situated in Scottsdale, the famed architect’s desert laboratory is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers multiple options for guided tours of the grounds.

  • Apache Trail Scenic Drive: This stretch of highway is well worth an early wake up for sweeping views of desert scenery, as well as access to some great lakes and trails! If you’re feeling like a full-day trip, the entire loop of the scenic drive is over 120 miles and includes a daunting unpaved section.

  • Cosanti Originals: An art enthusiast’s dream, Cosanti is an outdoor collection of handmade bronze and ceramic art set among “earth-casting” structures crafted by Italian-American artist and architect Paolo Soleri.

  • Desert Botanical Garden: Considered one of the best in the U.S., the Desert Botanical Garden displays 50,000 Sonoran desert flora across 140 acres. Travelers and locals agree—it’s worth the visit!

  • Hiking (Papago Park, Boulder Canyon Trail, Camelback Mountain): Whether you’re trekking solo or with small kids or somewhere in between, there is no shortage of great hiking opportunities in the Phoenix area. Pair a three-hour round-trip hike of Boulder Canyon Trail with the Apache Trail Scenic Drive, or take a stroll through Papago Park before visiting the Desert Botanical Garden.

  • Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch: A rather peculiar activity that I highly recommend for families with young children, this quaint attraction between Phoenix and Tucson is a great spot to plan a stop on your road trip. Stretch your legs, feed an ostrich, and make some bizarre memories.

  • Berdena’s: A local favorite for great coffee and breakfast options in Scottsdale. Their avocado toast with egg is a must-try!

  • Fry Bread House: This Native American restaurant serves up savory and sweet fry bread, tacos, and stews in a no-frills environment, and has been a local favorite for over 30 years.

  • Blanco Cocina + Cantina: Blanco serves up tried-and-true Mexican food favorites with a twist. Visit one of their many locations across the Phoenix area and be sure to try the birria tacos. You won’t be disappointed!

  • The Wright Bar at Arizona Biltmore: The birthplace of the original tequila sunrise, this Phoenix icon is a must-visit, even if you aren’t staying at the property.

  • Micky’s Hot Dogs: If you’ve never tasted a Sonoran hot dog, plan a stop at Micky’s Hot Dogs in Mesa. They’ve been around since 1995 and are an affordable local favorite!

Need to know

The best time to visit Phoenix? February and March. With average high temperatures ranging from 72 to 77, this time of year is perfect for experiencing all that Phoenix has to offer. MLB spring training begins, desert flowers are in bloom at the botanical gardens, and the weather is ideal for hiking. Book early, because these months are the peak of Phoenix’s tourism season!
