Day 1: Tórshavn

Delicious seafood dishes at ROKS

The capital of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn, is a great place to indulge in delicious food and explore cozy coffee shops. I highly recommend booking in advance for ROKS, a popular dining spot. Other notable recommendations include Thai Style Takeaway, Etika Sushi, Suppugarõurin, Brell Cafe, Breyðvirkið, and Paname Cafe, all of which offer excellent culinary experiences and coffee.

For your grocery needs, Miklagarõur is the largest supermarket on the island, providing the best selection of groceries. You can find a variety of takeaways at the supermarket, including options like salad bars, open-faced sandwiches, roasted pork, and appetizers.

Day 2: Suðuroy

The town of Suðuroy

Stay another night in Tórshavn since the port to Suðuroy is located there. Suðuroy is the southernmost island in the Faroe Islands. To reach Suðuroy, you must take the Smyril ferry, which offers multiple daily departures from Tórshavn. The ferry journey takes approximately 2 hours. Check the ferry schedule online!

Some of points of interest on Suðuroy include Beinisvørð, Akraberg Lighthouse, and Asmundarstakkur.

Make sure to stop by the town and have lunch at Cafe MorMor during your journey from the south to the north of Suðuroy. This charming little cafe offers not only homemade food and desserts, but also a lovely view that adds to the experience.

Day 3: Fossa, Kalsoy & Gjógv

Kallur Lighthouse in the distance

On your way to Klaksvík, make a little detour to Fossa, which means ‘waterfall’. Klaksvík is the second-largest city in the Faroe Islands, and the main reason for our visit to this city was primarily because of Kalsoy. Make sure to check the ferry schedule from Klaksvík to Syðradalur, the ferry port of Kalsoy.

Arrive early at the ferry port, especially during the peak season, to secure a spot if you’re traveling with a rental car. We arrived an hour in advance and parked our car while we explored Klaksvík town. Don’t miss the fish and chips food truck near the port!

Some of the points of interest in Kalsoy include James Bond Tombstone, Kallur Lighthouse, and Mikladalur.

Gjógv, which means ‘gorge’ in Faroese, derives its name from the renowned sea-filled gorge that characterizes this town. We made the decision to spend a night here. There is a hiking trail that offers a panoramic view of the distinctive profile of Kalsoy’s raked back, and if you’re lucky, you may even catch sight of puffins along the sea cliffs.

Day 4: Gongutúrur, Hvithamar & Saksun

The view from Gongutúrur/Hvithamar

After checking out from Gjaargardur Guesthouse, we drove about 5-10 minutes to Gongutúrur/Hvithamar for a hike. The view is amazing up the mountain.

Saksun is a remote little village with a church, lagoon, and waterfalls. The panoramic view is incredible, surrounded by steep mountains.

Day 5: Vagar

Lake above the ocean

Vágar is the island where the airport is located, and it is home to several key attractions, which is why we decided to stay here for two nights.

Dunnesdrangar

Vágar offers several hiking opportunities. One popular hike is Dunnesdrangar, though access is limited to certain days and requires joining a guided hike for a fee. Another well-known hike is Trælanípan (Slave Cliff), also known as the Lake Above the Ocean. To access the trail, you’ll need to obtain permission by paying a fee. Along the route, you’ll encounter several viewpoints, including views of the lake and Bøsdalafossur Waterfall. In our opinion, the most captivating viewpoint is located on the cliff on the opposite side of the waterfall, and it’s definitely worth the short detour to experience this breathtaking sight.

Witch’s Finger Trail

The last point of interest in Vágar is the Witch’s Finger Trail. This walk is neither long nor steep and offers a close-up view of this striking rock formation.

For dining in Vágar, we recommend two spots:

  • Fish and Chips

  • Fiskastykkið // Úti á Gjógv

Day 6: Mykines & Múlafossur Waterfall

Puffin

Mykines

The port for Mykines departures is located on Vágar. Mykines Island is a paradise for birdlife, especially puffins. If you wish to explore the island, visits are only possible through a guided tour. During the boat journey, you’ll also have the opportunity to see the dramatic sea stacks of Drangarnir and the islet Tindhólmur from the water.

Múlafossur

Another must-visit is one of the most iconic sights in the Faroe Islands: Múlafossur Waterfall, a spectacular waterfall cascading directly into the ocean.

Day 7: Vagar farewell

We flew out the next morning. The view from above is amazing.

Be sure to get a window seat when flying in and out of the Faroe Islands.

Need to know

  • Best visit in June or July. It might not be sunny every day during your trip, so be prepared for bad weather like heavy wind and rain.

  • Always verify the opening hours of takeaways and restaurants on their Facebook pages, as the opening hours on Google Maps may not be up to date. Most cafes and restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

  • No cash is needed as everything can be paid for with a credit card.

  • Supermarkets are closed on Sundays, except for Mylnan.

  • There aren't many food places outside of the capital Tórshavn, so do plan for your meals, be it eating at cafes or restaurants or simply stocking up on basic food necessities from the supermarkets.

  • Purchase alcoholic beverages and soda at the airport for a lower price. Make sure to buy them before leaving the airport!
