Things to do on the Outer Banks

The Bodie Island Lighthouse stands tall

  • Shopping in Duck: There are lots of shops and restaurants in Duck, so it is perfect for strolling about. The shops at Scarborough Faire are a great place to grab a coffee, venture into the Christmas Mouse, or sample some olive oil at the Outer Banks Olive Oil Company.

  • Visiting lighthouses- The Outer Banks has five lighthouses, most of which you can go inside and climb to the top! You’ll be rewarded with a perfect view of the surrounding area. Just hold on to your hats!

  • Jockey’s Ridge: You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re in the desert. Jockey’s Ridge is home to the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast, perfect for flying kites or, if you’re feeling more daring, try sandboarding or hang-gliding.

  • Wright Brother’s National Memorial: A US National Park, the Wright Brother’s Memorial is a terrific place to learn about the evolution of the first flight. There is a museum complete with a large replica of the Wright Brother’s plane, a gift shop, and a walking trail which leads to the memorial itself.

  • Swimming in Pamlico Sound: If rough ocean waves aren’t your thing, don’t worry. On the other side of the Outer Banks (the side closest to mainland NC) is the Pamlico Sound. It has no waves, only calm waters, so it is ideal for families with small children or for anyone else who may not be an avid beach-goer.

  • Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum: The Graveyard of the Atlantic got its name from the number of ships that were wrecked in the turbulent waters of this location. Here, you can see exhibits showcasing significant shipwrecks and learn about each of the ships that have become part of the graveyard. Don’t miss the history of the Pirate Blackbeard’s ship: Queen Anne’s Revenge.

  • Wild horse viewing: One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Outer Banks, viewing wild horses is a breathtaking experience. The horses inhabit areas accessible only by vehicles with 4 wheel drive or by ferry, and guided tours are recommended to have the best chance of seeing the horses.

Places to eat & drink on the Outer Banks

Howard's Pub and Raw Bar in Ocracoke

  • The Kind Cup Coffee: One of the best lattes I have ever had, the Kind Cup offers pastries, locally made art and gifts, and of course, coffee. It is right near the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, which is perfect for after you climb the lighthouse! Dietary options available.

  • Black Pelican Seafood Company: Dinner with a view. This oceanfront restaurant located in Kitty Hawk used to be the sight of Lifesaving Station #6 where, according to local legend, the Black Pelican helped rescue people stranded on the nearby beach.

  • Isla Coffee Shop: A local business located in Avon. This shop has beachy vibes with a focus on wellbeing. Try their wellness latte or buy a locally made soap from their storefront, and don’t forget to sign your name in the guest book! Dietary options available.

  • Duck Pizza Company: Located in the Scarborough Faire shopping center, this family-owned restaurant has pizza and subs made-to-order. After a long day of shopping in Duck, enjoy any of their thin-crust pizzas, sure to cure your hunger. Dietary options available.

  • Howard’s Pub and Raw Bar: Located in Ocracoke, this unique Pub is decorated with license plates from around the US. Their food is just as impressive, with delicious options that won’t disappoint. Dietary options available.

Need to know

Be advised about storms, especially during hurricane season, as these are barrier islands. They do flood quite easily.

Much of the Outer Banks is protected wildlife areas, so make sure if you take seashells, encounter animals, or take part in any outdoor activities, that you do so safely and adhere to wildlife and park guidelines.
