Things to do in Roatán

Diving: Thanks to its location along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Roatán is a premier scuba diving destination, offering crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life, and diverse dive sites for all experience levels.

Snorkeling: If you’re not a diver, Roatán offers equally great experiences for snorkeling. Vibrant coral reefs are located just offshore in the West Bay area—just steps from luxury accommodations—and teem with colorful marine life in calm, clear waters. You might even see a sea turtle!

Gumbalimba Park: Nestled in West Bay, Gumbalimba Park combines lush botanical gardens, free-roaming monkeys and macaws, a scenic suspension bridge, and a beachfront with kayaking and zip‑lining, making it an unforgettable nature and adventure experience in Roatán.

The Roatan Chocolate Factory: Take a chocolate-making class, tour the chocolate factory, learn how they make Honduran chocolate, taste some samples, and stock up on more than your fair share of chocolate bars to take home. My favorite is the chili cabro—delicious!

The West End: A charming, walkable area perched along the shore that’s easily reachable by water taxi from West Bay, where colorful shops, lively restaurants and bars, and dive centers line the waterfront and offer a vibrant, immersive island atmosphere.

Places to eat & drink in Roatán

Bananarama: Make your way over to Bananarama for the best coffee shop in West Bay. You can also grab baked goods, local coffee beans, and popsicles in this cafe as well.

Alera: Even if you aren’t staying at the Kimpton, it’s worth a trip to eat at Alera, one of the best restaurants on the island. I highly recommend the chef’s tasting menu to experience the best of what they have to offer!

Anthony’s Chicken: This place is often recommended by locals and has some of the best ceviche on the island!

Cayuco Beach Bar: Unbeatable sunset views and delicious seafood make this restaurant a top pick in the West Bay area!

Need to know

The local currency is the Honduran lempira, but US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. Carry small bills that are in good condition—locals often will not accept damaged bills! A car isn’t necessary, but be sure to schedule your airport shuttle in advance. Rental cars are available if you want to explore the island on your own. I recommend staying in West Bay, which is the most popular spot for white sand and calm waters, but quieter spots like Camp Bay are great for solitude. And remember to pack bug spray and reef-friendly sunscreen!
