Things to do in Kaua'i

Kaua'i Helicopter Experience with Airborne Aviation - A Major Highlight of Our Trip

  • Beach House Restaurant: Set right on the ocean’s edge, this iconic spot is perfect for sunset dining with unbeatable views. The Pacific-fusion menu and romantic setting make it a must-visit for both date nights and memorable family dinners.

  • Tidepools at the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i: Consistently voted one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, Tidepools serves fresh island cuisine in thatched bungalows over a koi-filled lagoon. It’s a dreamy, one-of-a-kind dining experience that’s perfect for a special night out.

  • Spa day at Koloa Landing Resort or Anara Spa at Grand Hyatt: Treat yourself to a luxurious spa experience — whether it’s a tropical massage, body wrap or a couples treatment, you’ll find the ultimate relaxation. The Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt is especially renowned for its open-air garden treatment rooms and tranquil ambiance.

  • Surfing lessons at Poʻipū Beach: Poʻipū Beach is one of the best spots on the island for beginner surfers, and several surf schools offer family-friendly lessons. The gentle waves and expert instructors make it fun and approachable for all ages.

  • Poʻipū Shopping Village: This open-air shopping center has a great mix of boutiques, art galleries, casual eateries and live entertainment. It's a fun place to grab a bite (Keoki’s Paradise is a local favorite), pick up unique souvenirs or enjoy live hula and music in the courtyard.

  • Kōloa Village & Old Kōloa Town: Just a short drive away, this charming historic town is full of plantation-era character, boutique shops and local cafes. It’s a great spot to explore on foot, grab a coffee or shave ice and enjoy the relaxed, local vibe.

  • Snorkeling at Lawai Beach: Tucked just around the bend from Poʻipū Beach, Lawai Beach offers some of the best snorkeling on the South Shore. Expect to see vibrant tropical fish and maybe even a sea turtle or two!

  • Sunset walk & sea turtle spotting: Head to the Poʻipū Beach area in the evening for a scenic oceanfront stroll. Hawai'ian green sea turtles often come ashore to rest at sunset, offering a magical and memorable moment for kids and adults alike.

Need to know

  • Rent a Car
Kauaʻi is rural and spread out — renting a car is the best way to explore beaches, hiking trails, towns and hidden gems at your own pace. A 4WD isn’t necessary unless you're planning off-road adventures like Polihale Beach.

  • Book Activities & Restaurants Early
Popular spots like Tidepools and Beach House fill up quickly, especially in peak seasons. If something’s high on your list, it’s worth reserving well in advance (even before you arrive).

  • Pack for All-Weather
The South Shore (Poʻipū/Kōloa) is generally sunnier, but weather can shift quickly. Bring light layers, a rain jacket, reef-safe sunscreen and good walking sandals or water shoes.

  • Be Mindful of Ocean Conditions
Always check surf and current conditions before entering the water — Kauaʻi’s ocean can be unpredictable. Poʻipū Beach is one of the safest for families, but lifeguards and caution signs are your friends!

  • Respect Nature & Wildlife
If you see a sea turtle or monk seal on the beach, give them space — at least 10–15 feet. Don’t touch coral or feed fish when snorkeling.

  • Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
It’s required by law in Hawaiʻi to protect the coral reefs. Look for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

  • Support Local
Opt for local-owned shops, farmers markets and restaurants when you can. The Saturday farmers market at The Shops at Kukuiʻula is especially fun and family-friendly!

  • Go on a Sunset Cruise
Several operators leave from nearby Port Allen (about 25–30 min from Poʻipū). A catamaran cruise along the Nā Pali Coast is absolutely stunning and a top highlight for many visitors.

  • Try a Shave Ice
It’s not just a snow cone — Hawaiian shave ice is next level. Uncle’s Shave Ice (Poʻipū) or Wailua Shave Ice (Kapaʻa) are both worth the hype.

  • Mix in a “Lazy Day”
It’s tempting to pack every day with activities, but some of the best moments come from doing less — hanging by the pool, lounging at Poʻipū Beach or enjoying s’mores night at your resort.
