Curator’s statement
Hanoi is a beautiful mix of chaos and calm, with scooters zipping by, peaceful lakes, and street food around every corner. We wandered through the Old Quarter, ate countless bowls of pho, and felt completely immersed in the culture. It was the perfect combination of adventure and romance, and I cannot wait to go back someday to explore more of Vietnam.

Things to do in Hanoi, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
This iconic site in Hanoi is the final resting place of Vietnam’s revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh. Visit during the day to stroll the beautifully maintained gardens and explore nearby historical buildings. Viewing the body is only possible during limited morning hours, so check ahead. In the evening, stop by for the solemn flag-lowering ceremony, where locals gather in a powerful display of national pride.
Temple of Literature
This historic site is Vietnam’s first national university, founded in 1070. It features traditional architecture, peaceful gardens, and stone tablets honoring scholars. The temple offers a beautiful glimpse into Vietnam’s rich educational heritage and Confucian culture.
Hanoi street food tour
We booked an Airbnb experience and rode on scooters through hidden alleys, discovering authentic eats and local sights. My husband and I still talk about the “pho pillows” we had, and we cannot find them in New York. Just watch out for the “Saigon Kiss” when getting off the scooter.
Water puppet show
A classic Hanoi performance featuring puppets dancing on water set to traditional music. The storytelling beautifully showcases Vietnam’s rich heritage. The shows are short and sweet, lasting about 45 minutes.
Sky Lotte Observation Deck
This must-visit spot offers stunning 360-degree views of Hanoi from the 65th floor. Don’t miss the thrilling glass-floor Sky Walk, cultural photo zones with traditional costumes, and a rooftop lounge perfect for sunsets. It’s a unique way to experience the city from above.
Hang Gai Street shopping
Located in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, this street is famous for beautiful silk accessories and clothing alongside Vietnamese ceramics. It’s a great spot to pick up authentic local treasures and souvenirs.
Places to eat & drink in Hanoi, Vietnam

La Terrasse du Metropole: A charming Parisian-style café at the Sofitel Metropole with al-fresco dining, serving refined French classics in a historic atmosphere.
Lý Club Hanoi: A stylish restaurant offering elevated Vietnamese dishes in a chic setting, blending tradition with modern flair.
La Verticale: Renowned for its French-Vietnamese fine dining, this elegant restaurant showcases inventive cuisine by chef Didier Corlou.
Bánh Mì Ngọc Thuốc: A beloved local spot famous for its fresh, flavorful bánh mì sandwiches, perfect for a quick and tasty bite.
Bún Riêu - Hàng Bạc: A classic Hanoi eatery serving rich and tangy crab noodle soup, a must-try for authentic Vietnamese flavors.
Need to know
Beware of scammers. Always ask your taxi driver to drop you off right in front of your hotel so the bell staff can step in if needed. Before paying, double-check your bill to make sure there are no surprise charges. A little extra caution goes a long way to keeping your trip smooth and stress-free.
With a few additional days, I’d recommend a day trip outside of Hanoi to Ninh Binh, just 1.5 to 2 hours away. It’s often called “Halong Bay on land,” and it’s known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, peaceful rivers, and lush countryside. A boat ride through the caves of Trang An or a hike up to the Mua Cave viewpoint offers a scenic and refreshing break from the city.
