Day 1: Arrive in Rio

Welcome to Rio! Ease into the city’s unmistakable rhythm. After checking into Ipanema Inn, you’ll immediately understand why this neighborhood is so beloved. Tucked just steps from the beach, the boutique hotel places you in the center of Rio’s effortlessly cool lifestyle, where mornings begin with ocean breezes and days flow naturally from café stops to beach walks and sunset cocktails. The energy here will make you feel local off the bat: barefoot luxury mixed with vibrant city life.

Spend your first afternoon wandering through the chic streets of Ipanema, stopping into iconic Brazilian boutiques like Farm Rio, known for its colorful tropical prints and unmistakably Brazilian aesthetic. The neighborhood is filled with tree lined streets, art galleries, cafés, and stylish locals, creating an atmosphere that feels both glamorous and relaxed. As the sun sets, make your way toward Leblon, Ipanema’s sophisticated neighboring district known for its incredible dining scene, cocktail bars, and lively nightlife.

The evening is all about immersing yourself in Rio’s social culture. Sip on chilled cachaça cocktails or a classic caipirinha while enjoying dinner among the city’s effortlessly fashionable crowd. Leblon comes alive at night, with candlelit restaurants, buzzing sidewalks, live music drifting through open windows, and locals lingering over drinks long after dinner ends. It’s the perfect introduction to Rio: warm air, incredible food, tropical cocktails, and a city that seems to celebrate life at every hour.

Day 2: Rio's greatest hits

Wake up in the heart of Ipanema and enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Ipanema Inn before heading out for a full day exploring Rio’s most iconic sights. If it is Sunday while you are in Rio, the day offers an especially vibrant energy. It’s the perfect opportunity to wake up early and experience the local creative culture, starting with the famous Hippie Fair at Praça General Osório. The market is filled with local artists and vendors selling handmade jewelry, paintings, woven bags, leather goods, and colorful Brazilian fashion, offering a lively glimpse into Rio’s creative culture.

If you opt for a private guide, arrange to be scooped up directly at the hotel for a curated day through the city’s most famous landmarks. While the itinerary can absolutely be done independently using Uber and pre-booked attraction tickets, having a private guide makes the experience feel seamless and immersive, especially for a first visit to Rio de Janeiro. Your guide will not only handle transportation and timing but also share the stories, history, and local nuances that bring the city to life as you move between neighborhoods.

The day begins at Sugarloaf Mountain, one of Rio’s most recognizable landmarks. Arriving in the morning allows for cooler temperatures and typically clearer skies as you board the famous two-stage cable car rising above Guanabara Bay. The first stop at Morro da Urca already offers sweeping views of the coastline, but the final ascent to Sugarloaf’s summit is truly breathtaking. From the top, Rio unfolds in every direction—the curves of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the lush peaks of Tijuca Forest, sailboats scattered across the bay, and Christ the Redeemer visible high above the city skyline.

From there, continue through Rio’s scenic neighborhoods toward Corcovado Mountain and Tijuca National Park. The drive itself is part of the experience, weaving through tropical forest and offering glimpses of local life, colorful hillside communities, and dramatic ocean views. Standing beneath Christ the Redeemer is one of those moments that feels larger than expected—not only because of the monument itself, but because of the scale of the city stretching beneath it. From the summit, nearly all of Rio is visible: the beaches, lagoon, mountains, dense jungle, and endless Atlantic coastline that make the city feel so cinematic.

If exploring independently, it’s best to start the morning early, and pre-purchase timed tickets for both Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain. Uber is the easiest way to move around the city, and the official Corcovado train or authorized shuttle vans provide access to Christ the Redeemer. An insider tip is to always order Uber Black, get nicer cars and priority pickup! For Sugarloaf, rideshares can take you directly to Praia Vermelha, where the cable cars depart. Comfortable shoes, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and water are highly recommended, as the day involves quite a bit of walking and exposure to the sun. Christ the Redeemer’s stunning views over the city are one of a kind.

After a full afternoon of sightseeing, return to Ipanema around as the city begins transitioning into its golden evening light. The beach promenade fills with runners, cyclists, and locals gathering to watch the sunset, while cafés and bars begin to buzz with energy. Spend the evening relaxing over dinner at Giuseppe Grill Lagoa, a sophisticated restaurant overlooking the lagoon and one of the city’s most beautiful nighttime settings. Between the iconic landmarks, tropical scenery, and effortless rhythm of the city, today captures everything that makes Rio unforgettable.

Day 3: Sun, sand & sail

After a full day of sightseeing, today is your perfect slow Rio day, designed for relaxation, beautiful scenery, and enjoying the city at your own pace. Spend the morning soaking up the sun at the beach with complimentary chairs, towels, and umbrellas provided through the hotel. When you are ready to explore, take a leisurely walk along Rio’s iconic beachfront promenade through Ipanema, Arpoador, and Copacabana, enjoying the ocean views, lively atmosphere, and famous coastline along the way.

As you explore, stop into some of Rio’s most well-known shopping destinations, including Osklen for elevated Brazilian fashion, Farm Rio HQ for colorful tropical prints, the Havaianas Flagship Store for classic Brazilian sandals, and H.Stern Jewelry & Museum for beautiful gemstones and luxury jewelry. For a sweet treat, cool off with artisanal Brazilian ice cream at Momo Gelato or Mil Frutas, and try unique local flavors such as Açaí, Jaboticaba, Graviola, and Pitanga.

Want a unique view of the city at sunset? Enjoy a boat ride with Sail Rio, a beautiful afternoon experience on the water with unforgettable views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, and Rio’s dramatic coastline. After a few hours of caipirinhas, sailing, and swimming, disembark and enjoy dinner at the marina. Check out Corrientes 348, known for its excellent Argentine-style steaks and elegant atmosphere. If you are still up for more after dinner, you can head to Pedra do Sal for its famous Monday night samba street party. The area becomes extremely crowded, so it is best to bring only essentials and stay mindful of your belongings while enjoying the music and lively local energy.

Day 4: Colorful stairways, grand cafés & final city views

If following a four-day itinerary in Rio, today is your final opportunity to soak in the beauty and energy of the city before departing. Spend the morning at a relaxed pace with time to enjoy the beach one last time, fit in any last-minute shopping, and savor breakfast before checking out of the hotel. It is highly recommended to arrange a private guide for the afternoon so you can comfortably keep your luggage with you throughout the tour and head directly to the airport afterward without needing to return to the hotel.

Begin your tour exploring some of the city’s most iconic cultural and historic landmarks. Start with Escadaria Selarón (aka the Selarón Steps) vibrant tiled staircase created by artist Jorge Selarón and one of Rio’s most photographed sites. Take time to soak in the beauty of Santa Teresa, Rio’s charming bohemian hillside neighborhood known for its colonial architecture, art studios, winding streets, and creative atmosphere

Continue to Arcos da Lapa, the historic aqueduct that has become one of the city’s best-known architectural landmarks. Visit the striking Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, whose dramatic modern design was inspired by Mayan pyramids and offers a completely different perspective on the city’s religious architecture.

Don’t forget to stop at Confeitaria Colombo, the elegant Belle Époque café founded in 1894 and famous for its ornate interiors, pastries, and coffee culture. Nearby, explore the breathtaking Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, often considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, filled with towering bookshelves and intricate Portuguese Gothic design before continuing directly to the airport for your departure.
