Advisor - The Ultimate Guide to Mexico City
Curator’s statement

I had the best long weekend exploring Mexico City! A last-minute solo trip turned into one of my favorite getaways of the year. It was the perfect mix of wandering through vibrant neighborhoods and parks, browsing unique shops, and eating so many incredible tacos and meals. If you’re a foodie, this city is a must-visit! I walked everywhere (much needed after all that eating!) and never ran out of things to see, do, or taste. Already counting down until I can go back!

Things to do in Mexico City

Teotihuacán from the hot air balloon

Explore the neighborhoods

Each one has its own unique charm filled with amazing restaurants, shopping, and sights. I wouldn’t skip a single one!

  • Roma Norte

  • Condesa

  • Zócalo

  • Polanco

  • Coyoacán

History & local culture

  • Museo Nacional de Antropología: A world-class museum showcasing Mexico’s rich history. You can easily spend hours here!

  • Castillo de Chapultepec: A historic castle with panoramic views of the city. I highly recommend spending an hour or so exploring the castle, then wandering through Chapultepec Park afterward.

  • Parks: The greenery in Mexico City is unbelievable! There are so many beautiful parks to stroll through, read in, or people-watch. My favorites were Parque México, Parque España, and the expansive Chapultepec Park.

  • Palacio de Bellas Artes: Even if you just walk by, this building is stunning. Inside, you’ll find breathtaking architecture and art in the heart of downtown. For the best view, head to the Sears Tower across the street.

  • Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral: A majestic cathedral overlooking the Zócalo area. One of the city’s most iconic landmarks!

  • Lucha Libre: Such a fun and unique experience! The excitement and energy of Mexican wrestling is indescribable! A must-do!

  • Frida Kahlo Museum I’m so glad I booked this! One of my trip highlights. You get to explore the artist’s vibrant home and life in Coyoacán. Pro tip: Buy tickets in advance—they sell out fast!

  • Biblioteca Vasconcelos: One of the coolest libraries I have ever seen! An architectural masterpiece and book lover’s dream.

Markets

I love wandering the local markets for traditional Mexican crafts and souvenirs. Mexico City is known for its silver, ceramics, and jade, and the markets are filled with beautiful finds. These were my favorites:

  • Mercado de Artesanías La Ciudadela: Best for traditional Mexican crafts and souvenirs.

  • Coyoacán Markets & Artisan Shops: Wander colorful stalls and local boutiques.

  • Bazaar del Sábado: Saturday only artisan market full of handmade goods and art.

Shopping

Mexico City has some of the best shopping I’ve ever seen! Beyond the markets, the boutiques are filled with home décor, vintage treasures, and beautifully curated local pieces. Some of my favorites were:

  • 180º Shop: Concept store featuring local designers.

  • Audette: Known for their chic leather handbags.

  • Proyecto Rufina: Ethically made fashion and cute home décor.

  • Carla Fernández: Contemporary Mexican fashion rooted in indigenous techniques.

  • Irene Buffa: Stylish boutique blending modern aesthetics with amazing vintage designer pieces.

  • IKAL Store: Concept store mixing fashion, art, and design from local talent.

Day trips

  • Teotihuacán & hot air balloon: An early-morning adventure that’s absolutely worth it. You’ll soar over the ancient pyramids in a hot air balloon, enjoy breakfast in a cave, and then explore the ruins up close. Truly an unforgettable experience!

  • Jardines Flotantes de Xochimilco: Perfect for groups or solo travelers joining a tour. Spend the afternoon floating along colorful canals with food, music, and lively vibes.

Places to eat & drink in Mexico City

Trompo tacos at Tacos del Valle

Cafés & brunch spots

  • Panadería Rosetta: The line is worth the wait! You must try the famous guava roll, but don’t skip the pan con dulce de leche and a coffee to start your day right.

  • Odette Condesa: This cute neighborhood café is perfect for slow mornings and prime people watching. Stop back in the afternoon for a pick-me-up with one of their amazing cookies!

  • Quentin Café: This modern coffee shop is the perfect spot for a caffeine break while exploring Roma and Condesa.

  • Cafeología: If you find yourself in Coyoacán and need a coffee stop, head here. Their specialty coffee is incredible, and I highly recommend the corn bread!

Lunch & dinner restaurants

  • Taquería Los Cocuyos: I always love an Anthony Bourdain approved spot, and this street taco spot did not disappoint. This is a must-visit taco spot! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

  • Jenni’s Quesadillas: I know street food can seem intimidating, but this local favorite is a trusted spot for fresh, made-to-order quesadillas. The chicken one was my favorite!

  • Tacos del Valle: A great casual stop for incredible tacos. I recommend ordering the three trompo tacos!

  • Masala y Maíz: A creative blend of Mexican, Indian, and East African flavors. The small chicken and shrimp are both must get dishes!

  • Tacos Hola El Güero: This quick, no-frills taco spot known for its variety of fillings. Perfect for an easy and delicious lunch.

  • Rosetta: An upscale dining experience set inside a historic townhouse. My two favorite dishes were the Tamales de elote con huitlacoche and Tacos de col rizada, pipián de pistaches y romeritos. They can even do half portions so you can try more dishes!

  • El Cardenal: A classic spot for traditional Mexican cuisine, perfect for breakfast or lunch. You have to try their baked-in-house conchas (Mexico’s most famous pastry) with a cup of hot chocolate, so good!

  • Expendio de Maíz Sin Nombre: A truly unique experience where you sit at communal tables and are served dish after dish until you tap out. There’s no menu or reservations, but they do accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions. Every dish I had was remarkable!

  • Contramar: The go-to spot for seafood. You must order the tuna tostadas and the ceviche—both are incredible.

  • Taquería Arandas: A local joint serving some of the best tacos!

Dessert

  • Churrería El Moro: The legendary spot for hot churros and chocolate. I recommend getting a few dipping sauces to try. They’re open late and always fresh!

Bars & nightlife

  • Handshake Speakeasy: A hidden speakeasy with creative cocktails and an intimate ambiance. One of the best bars I’ve ever been to. The whole experience was a 10/10. The Mexi-Thai was my favorite drink!

  • Licorería Limantour: An amazing cocktail bars with inventive drinks and a lively atmosphere.

  • Wallace Whiskey Bar: A cool bar with a DJ and great drinks, especially if you love whiskey.

  • Departamento: A stylish two-level bar with a rooftop. DJs on both floors kept the energy high, and the cocktails are fantastic.

  • Cometa: This club is amazing! My favorite place to dance! Incredible DJs every night and great vibes all around.

Need to know

October is one of the most magical times to visit Mexico City, as the city comes alive with Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Streets and plazas are decorated with colorful marigolds, papel picado, and intricate altars honoring loved ones who have passed. Don’t miss the Day of the Dead Parade, which fills the city with vibrant costumes, music, and dancing. It’s a truly unforgettable time to experience Mexico’s culture and spirit.
