Things to do in Cartagena Colombia

Colorful buildings in Cartagena

Visit to the Mercado de Bazurto, the largest open-air market in Cartagena. Here, you can find fresh produce, seafood and meats from all over Colombia. Be sure to try some of the local fruits, like mangoes, papayas and pineapples.

Explore the Getsemani neighborhood. Get lost in the vibrant neighborhood — home to a number of great restaurants, serving everything from upscale sit down international cuisine to traditional Colombian street food.

Enjoy a delicious drink and light bites at one of Cartagena's many rooftop restaurants. With stunning views of the city, these restaurants are the perfect place to enjoy a romantic pre-dinner dinner or the start to a night out with friends.

Explore the city's historic center. You'll find colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and a number of museums and churches.

Take in the lush tropical landscape. Make sure you have some cash on you for a quick coffee and or lemonade from one of the many street vendors.

Visit the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. This massive fortress was built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirates.

Enjoy a show at the Café Havana. This popular bar is the perfect place to experience some of the energy of Cartagena.

Grab a Nightcap at El Baron or dance the night away at Alquimico. Both located in the historic center and boasting delicious and award winning cocktails.

Explore the shopping. If you are looking for light, resort/beach attire this is your place. Check out some of the local boutiques like: St. Dom, Santo Azul, Agua de Leon, Chiqui House Boutique, Malvi Castañeda

Escape to Baru Island - The Sofitel Baru Island is the perfect beach getaway and absolutely deserves at least a one-night stay to take it all in

Day trips

Islas del Rosario.

HIGHLY recommend staying at least 1 night in Baru Island.

Places to eat & drink in Cartagena Colombia

Meal in Colombia.

La Cevicheria - It's a staple for a reason and not to be missed. Go early to avoid the crowds. I personally prefer to sit inside to avoid the street vendors but the outdoor street seating is also beautiful

Alquimico - Covering 3 floors in the old colonial city this is one of the best cocktail bars in town. Stay on the first floor for an intimate cozy experience or head to the rooftop to dance the night away with the live DJ. Arrive before 9:30pm to avoid a line

La Esquina del Bono - My favorite way to start the day! Stop in and grab some hot ban the Bono (Colombian cheese bread, very similar to Brazilian pão de queijo.) Small place, bread is baked in house so it can be hot and steamy, grab a coffee too and eat in the corner or take it back to your hotel room.

Doña Lola - Head over to this gem for some traditional Colombian coastal food. Enjoy a whole fried fish or a seafood cazuela. Recommend washing it down with a cold Club Colombia or a limonada de coco (Coconut lemonade, trust me on this one.)

Mar y Zielo - Beautiful upscale restaurant in a traditional 3 story building. Beautifully presented and delicious traditional Colombian food with a modern twist.

El Burlador - One of the most memorable dining experiences during my last visit. Highly recommend the tasting menu, it’s absolutely delicious and a great value/experience.

Hotel Movich - Best rooftop restaurant and bar for an epic sunset. Arrive by 4:45 to make sure you get a table, sit back and enjoy.

El Baron - Another beautiful cocktail bar with a bit of a speakeasy vibe. Perfect for a pre-dinner drink and a quick bite or a night cap.

El Sombreron Ostreria - Another ceviche must try! Grab and go, local corner spot whipping up made to order Cartagena style ceviche.

Epoca Cafe Bar - Perfect for a quick coffee or breakfast.

Buena Vida Marisqueria - I visited for breakfast and had one of the best arepa de huevo with shrimp of the trip. Highly recommended for brunch.
