Curator’s statement

My cousin attended St. Andrews for college, and when she graduated a few years ago, we celebrated with an epic road trip across Scotland—truly a trip of a lifetime filled with memories I’ll cherish forever. Scotland is so much more than just Edinburgh; every region has its own magic. Get out, explore, and soak up the incredible scenery and culture—you won’t regret it.

Things to do in Scotland

Old Man of Storr

  • Hike up to Arthur’s Seat and get the best views of Edinburgh from above!

  • Do a walking tour of the old town and learn all about Edinburgh’s rich history.

  • You can’t go to Edinburgh without visiting Edinburgh Castle. It is full of so much great information, and I highly recommend a guided tour. You learn so much more that way!

  • Doune Castle: Where are my Outlander fans? This castle has been used in many films and TV series, including Outlander, Monty Python, and Game of Thrones. I am a huge Outlander fan and was geeking out the whole time!

  • Isle of Skye: There is so much to see in this area that I recommend staying at least two or three nights. So many wonderful hikes (Quiraing, Fairy Pools, and The Old Man of Storr are my favorites), beautiful landscapes, and a great local distillery, Talisker.

  • Inverness: You could take a boat ride on Loch Ness and look for Nessie or visit the Culloden Battlefield.

  • Visit Speyside for some distillery tours and whisky tastings. I did a private whisky tasting at a local pub and it was a very memorable part of the trip!

Places to eat & drink in Scotland

  • Dishoom Edinburgh: One of my favorite restaurants in the world! The best Indian food. I highly recommend it.

  • The Witchery by the Castle: If you are looking for a luxurious date night spot with fabulous Scottish cuisine, this one is perfect for you.

  • 1820 Rooftop Bar and Restaurant: Nothing better than a cocktail in your hand with a view of Edinburgh Castle in the background!

  • Dulse and Brose: This one is located in Portree on the Isle of Skye. It features great seasonal Scottish dishes.

  • Gasta Port Righ: Also in Portree, this is a great spot to stop for breakfast in the morning or for pizza in the afternoon.

Need to know

There are so many wonderful ways to explore Scotland, but my personal favorite is by car. Driving gives you the freedom to stop wherever the scenery moves you and to travel on your own schedule—no rush, no rigid itinerary.

That said, I know driving on the left side of the road isn’t for everyone (I totally get it!). If that sounds intimidating, a guided tour—whether private or part of a small group—is an excellent alternative. You’ll enjoy a stress-free experience, meet great people, and have a knowledgeable guide sharing fascinating stories and insights you might otherwise miss. Many of my clients have absolutely loved their guided Scotland adventures!
