Curator’s statement
Garmisch-Partenkirchen became incredibly special to me when I had the opportunity to live there for three months during the winter season. Surrounded by the stunning Bavarian Alps, it truly feels like there is something for everyone—from world-class hiking, skiing, and biking to relaxing wellness spas, charming shops, and incredible restaurants. I loved spending my days exploring the mountain trails and breathtaking views, while my boyfriend enjoyed the city’s peaceful wellness and spa experiences, making it the perfect destination for both adventure and relaxation. Its picturesque streets, welcoming atmosphere, and easy one-hour train or drive to Munich make it a place that feels both magical and accessible.

Things to do in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm)
Explore the charm of Partenkirchen & shopping in Garmisch
Wander through historic Partenkirchen with its colorful old Bavarian buildings, local boutiques, and traditional German charm. Meanwhile, central Garmisch offers more modern shopping with popular outdoor and fashion brands.
Hike Wank Mountain
One of the best hikes in the area, Wank Mountain offers incredible views of Germany’s tallest peak, the Zugspitze. For a shorter adventure, hike only to the cozy mountain hut Tannenhütte for food and scenery.
Visit the Partnach Gorge
The iconic Partnach Gorge is a must-see natural attraction with dramatic waterfalls and cliffside pathways. Start your walk near the Olympic Ski Jump and go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Relax at a spa or fitness club
After long hiking days, enjoy your hotel spa or unwind at Fit Life Fitness Club. Many hotels in the area have excellent wellness facilities with mountain views.
Take a half-day trip to Mittenwald
The alpine town of Mittenwald is perfect for hiking, shopping, and relaxing. A favorite route is the hike toward Kranzberg and Ferchensee, including a stop at the beautiful Lainbach Waterfall. You can also take the chairlift up to shorten the hike.
Experience the “Top of Germany”
On a clear day, visiting the summit of the Zugspitze is unforgettable. Take the scenic train from Garmisch to Eibsee, then ride the gondola for breathtaking 360-degree alpine views.
Day trip to Füssen & Neuschwanstein Castle
Rent a car and visit Füssen to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Book tickets well in advance and aim for an early morning visit to avoid large crowds.
Watch a hockey game in Garmisch
Catch a game featuring SC Riessersee at the historic Olympic arena. The atmosphere is unique, and Garmisch’s winter sports history—including hosting the 1936 Winter Olympics—makes it even more special.
Visit the Friday market
Every Friday morning, the pedestrian zone in Garmisch hosts a lively local market with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and Bavarian specialties. It’s a great way to experience local culture and food.
Walk to the Werdenfels Castle ruins
The easy forest walk to Burgruine Werdenfels offers panoramic valley views and a glimpse into medieval history. It’s family-friendly and perfect for a relaxed outdoor excursion.

Mount 10
Located right near the train station, this is a great spot for small bites, cocktails, and a relaxed atmosphere. Their brunch is my personal favorite and a perfect way to start the day.
Bungalow 7
If you’re craving American-style comfort food, this is the place to go. They serve excellent burgers and crispy fries in a fun, casual setting.

A fun restaurant for sharing dishes with the table, especially if you enjoy tapas-style dining. It’s a great place to try a variety of flavors in one meal.
Der Laden
This cozy café has my favorite breakfast in town and is a must-visit while in Garmisch. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is consistently excellent.
Wildkaffee Rösterei
Known for some of the best cappuccinos in town, this local coffee roastery is perfect for a relaxing afternoon coffee. Grab a seat outside and enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere.
Louis - Cafe & Tagesbar
My favorite place in town for drinks and evening atmosphere. It’s lively, social, and perfect for sitting outside in the sun with music and cocktails.

Need to know
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is truly a destination for everyone—whether you are looking for a slow, relaxing getaway or a fast-paced adventure filled with hiking, skiing, and exploring the mountains. The town has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and while German is the main language, many locals—especially younger people—speak English and are always happy to help visitors.
Important tips
One important thing to know is that most shops and grocery stores are closed on Sundays and holidays, so it is best to plan shopping trips ahead of time and embrace the quieter, slower pace those days bring.
Because the weather in the mountains can change quickly, packing layers is essential, even during milder days. A camera is also a must—the alpine views, charming streets, and mountain scenery are unforgettable and you will want to capture every moment.
If you plan on dining at popular restaurants, reservations should be made in advance as they fill up quickly.
For skiing, rentals are conveniently available directly on the mountain, making it easy for travelers who do not want to carry or rent equipment in town.
With its stunning scenery, relaxing wellness culture, outdoor adventures, and easy access to Munich just an hour away, Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers an unforgettable experience for every type of traveler.
