Things to do in Puerto Rico

Beach hopping: One of my favorite ways to experience Puerto Rico is beach hopping, because every beach feels different. I especially love spending the day at Luquillo Beach, then grabbing local food right across the street at the kiosks for a relaxed, local-style beach day.
Exploring the rainforest: Visiting the rainforest is a must, and El Yunque National Forest is perfect for that. Whether you stop at scenic viewpoints or take a short walk, it’s an easy way to add nature and cooler air to your trip.
Swimming in natural river pools: Puerto Rico has beautiful natural river areas that feel peaceful and refreshing. Places like Gozalandia Falls are great for cooling off and enjoying nature away from the busier beaches.
Hiking with scenic views: Hiking in Puerto Rico doesn’t have to be intense to be rewarding. Coastal and nature trails in areas like Cabo Rojo offer incredible views and are best enjoyed at a relaxed pace.
Horseback riding: Horseback riding along the coast or through open land is a unique way to experience the island. It’s a memorable activity that connects you with Puerto Rico’s natural beauty while still feeling calm and enjoyable.
Wandering historic streets: Simply walking and exploring is one of my favorite things to do, especially in Old San Juan Historic District. The charm comes from slowing down, taking in the architecture, and letting the city unfold naturally.
Trying local food by the coast: Food is a big part of the experience, and casual coastal spots make it even better. I always enjoy stopping in Piñones or the Luquillo Kiosks to try local fritters and dishes in a relaxed, authentic setting.
Experiencing bioluminescence: Seeing the water glow at night is one of those unforgettable Puerto Rico moments. La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay is a great option if you’re looking for something special beyond daytime activities.
Explore Cueva Ventana in Arecibo: Cueva Ventana is a stunning cave opening perched atop a limestone cliff with expansive views over the Río Grande de Arecibo valley. The short hike to the overlook feels like stepping into a natural window in the rock, and it’s one of those Puerto Rico spots that surprises travelers with how big and dramatic the landscape feels.
Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Río Camuy: For travelers who want a more immersive underground experience, the Camuy Cave Park unveils a massive limestone cave system carved by one of the world’s biggest underground rivers. It’s a deeper adventure into geology and nature if you’re comfortable with guided tours and scenic pathways.
Places to eat & drink in Puerto Rico

San Juan and Old San Juan:
Santaella is a great option when you want an elevated meal that still feels rooted in Puerto Rican flavors. It’s ideal for a special night out without feeling overly formal or stiff.
Cocina Abierta offers a creative, modern take on local ingredients in a relaxed setting. I like recommending it for travelers who enjoy trying something different while still feeling comfortable and approachable.
La Casita Blanca is one of those places that feels like a true local favorite. It’s perfect for traditional Puerto Rican dishes served in a warm, no-frills atmosphere.
El Jibarito is a go-to for classic Puerto Rican comfort food in Old San Juan. It’s a great place to refuel after exploring the historic streets.
Princesa Cocina Cultura blends Puerto Rican cuisine with a scenic waterfront setting. It’s a relaxed option for lunch or dinner, especially in the evening.
Bebo’s Café is a casual, anytime spot that works well for breakfast, lunch, or a quick bite. It’s simple, satisfying, and very local.
La Factoría is a classic stop for craft cocktails with character. I recommend it for travelers who want a lively atmosphere without feeling like they’re in a tourist trap.
Cabo Rojo and Luquillo:
El Bohío is a great stop for fresh seafood and classic Puerto Rican dishes with a laid-back, coastal feel. I love recommending it for travelers exploring the southwest who want something authentic, satisfying, and unpretentious after a day by the sea.
Los Kioskos de Luquillo are ideal for casual dining with big flavor right by the beach. I love this stop because you can sample local food without committing to a long sit-down meal.
Need to know
Puerto Rico is easy to navigate, but a few small tips make the trip smoother. If you plan to explore beyond San Juan (like Luquillo, El Yunque, or the west coast), renting a car is usually the most convenient option—parking in Old San Juan can be limited, so it’s best to use rideshare or walk once you’re there.
Pack for quick weather changes: a light rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and reef-safe sunscreen go a long way, especially for rainforest days or beach hopping. For food and local spots, I always recommend going a little earlier than peak dining times on weekends so you can enjoy the experience without long waits.
Finally, if you’re adding a bioluminescent bay, conditions can vary—it’s worth keeping that evening flexible so you get the best experience possible.
