Advisor - The Magic of Chiang Mai: A Northern Thailand Gem
Curator’s statement

I enjoy visiting small towns that are rich in history and free from heavy traffic. Using Chiang Mai as a base, I usually take short trips there. It only takes me about an hour to get there.

Things to do in Northern Thailand

Wat Phra Hariphunchai is always the first place I visit. After walking around the temple and spending some time meditating, I like to stop by the local market next door for a fresh espresso and a bit of local shopping.

Next, I usually visit the Queen Chama Devi Monument. She has always been an inspiration to me—a strong and intelligent woman. I often think about how challenging it must have been for her to lead the town during her time. I love looking at her statue. Many people come to offer food and flowers, believing it brings blessings and good luck.

I also stop by Wat Chammathewi Temple, where people believe Queen Chama Devi’s ashes are kept inside the stupa. Visitors usually sit or stand quietly, showing deep respect for her.

Hariphunchai National Museum is a wonderful place to learn more about the region’s history. It’s conveniently located right across from Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai.

Chatuchak Lamphun Market is another highlight. It’s a lively local market where you can try a wide variety of local foods and drinks, as well as browse handmade products. It has a unique charm you won’t find anywhere else.

Places to eat & drink in Northern Thailand

Guay Tiew Moo

Some of my favorite places to eat and relax in Lamphun are Temple House, Lamphun, Daokanong Lamphun Restaurant, Krua Payayon, Riverside Resort, and Lamphun Ice Restaurant.

The region is famous for its Lam Yai (longan), a sweet local fruit that you’ll find everywhere.

When it comes to food, the must‑try dishes are Guay Tiew Moo Tun Lum Yai, a local noodle soup made with longan, and the classic northern favorite, Khao Soi. These dishes really capture the flavors of Lamphun.

Need to know

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and wear a hat. One important thing to remember is that women are not allowed to enter temple buildings if they are wearing short pants or short skirts. You also need to take off your shoes before entering. These are important parts of Thai culture.
