Curator’s statement
Vienna is the definition of understated luxury—breathtaking architecture, rich history, and a culture that lingers in every detail. It’s a city where imperial palaces and grand boulevards set the scene, and mornings are best spent slowly sipping coffee in a classic Viennese café, enjoying a warm croissant or delicate pastry. Afternoons invite long, elegant meals—perhaps a perfectly crisp Wiener Schnitzel paired with a refreshing Austrian beer. Vienna isn’t loud about its beauty—it reveals it gracefully, one refined moment at a time.

Things to do in Vienna, Austria

Ending the day at St. Stephen’s Cathedral as the sun lights up the Gothic details—one of the best views in Vienna.
Schwanban Palace: Plan at least half a day for this. Before your tour of Schönbrunn Palace, stop at Schlosscafé Schönbrunn in the visitor center for a latte and a fresh pastry, and definitely book your tickets online ahead of time since the timed slots do sell out. After going through the palace, head around to the garden side and walk up the sweeping steps to the grand central pavilion overlooking the Great Parterre for a great view of the grounds. From there, take your time walking the gravel paths and enjoying the symmetry, fountains, and beautifully kept gardens.
Ressepark: If you’ve just arrived at Vienna’s main train station in the afternoon, check into your hotel, drop your bags, and head out for an easy first walk—or take the metro if it’s not within walking distance. Make your way to Resselpark and stroll through the tree-lined paths toward Karlskirche (St. Charles Church). As you get closer, the grand dome and towering columns start to come into view. The church reflecting in the pond out front makes it one of the most beautiful and photogenic spots in the city.
Stephansplatz is a great area to explore in the evening, with pedestrian streets lined with local boutiques and familiar international brands. As you walk through, be sure to look up and take in the beautiful architecture all around you. The streets eventually open up into the main square, where everything feels a little more lively and classic Vienna. It’s a perfect place to just wander and take it all in.
St Stephan’s Cathedral: St. Stephan’s Cathedral is located in the main square of Stephansplatz. It’s a breathtaking piece of architecture, going back to the 12th Century. It’s open and free to go in, so take a look inside this historic cathedral, it’s as beautiful inside as it is from the outside.
Austrian Gallery Belvedere is a great place to stop if you want a break from walking around outside—especially in the summer heat. It’s a large art museum with multiple floors featuring works from different artists and time periods, so you can easily spend a couple of hours there. The rooms and the building itself are just as impressive as the artwork, with architecture that feels like part of the experience.
Places to eat & drink in Vienna, Austria

Schnitzel + Austrian beer = perfect Vienna dinner.
Kachel Cafe: Kachel Cafe is a classic Vienna café spot to stop in for an afternoon latte or espresso. Pair it with a pastry or slice of dessert from whatever fresh options they have that day. Tucked away on a quieter street off the main tourist areas, it has a local feel and is a relaxed place to slow down for a bit
Schachtelwirt: Schachtelwirt is tucked away in a side alley just off the main Stephansplatz square and is a great casual dinner spot. You’ll probably notice it by the line out the door since the inside is small, so be prepared to wait a little. The menu and sides change weekly, but if it’s available, order the classic Wiener Schnitzel with cranberry sauce and potato salad and pair it with an Austrian beer—it’s worth it.
Danilo Fusco Gelato & Specialty Coffee: After dinner, stop in for gelato and an espresso at Danilo Fusco Gelato & Specialty Coffee, just a short walk from Stephansplatz. The gelato is excellent and the shop has a cozy, local feel. It’s small inside, but if you can, grab a seat in the loft upstairs overlooking the shop—a great way to end the evening.
Schönbrunn Palace: Before your tour of Schönbrunn Palace, stop at Schlosscafé Schönbrunn in the visitor center for a latte and a fresh pastry. Make sure to book your tickets online ahead of time, since the timed entry slots do sell out.
Apapika Bowls: When you’re in the city center, stop into Apapika Bowls for an easy lunch. It’s a great spot for Hawaiian-style bowls—I’d recommend the Lani Chicken. It’s fast, simple, and perfect if you want a quick bite without doing a full sit-down meal.
Figlmüller’s Café am Dom: Figlmüller’s Café am Dom, right in Stephansplatz, is a great lunch option if you want to be in the heart of the city. It’s a bit pricier since it’s in the main square, but sitting outside with a direct view of St. Stephen’s Cathedral makes it worth it. Go for the schnitzel with an Austrian beer, and if you have room, add a tiramisu with a latte to finish.
Need to know
Use the public transportation—it’s easy, reliable, and simple to figure out or just spend time walking through the city since Vienna is very walkable and easy to navigate. As you wander through the city center, you really can’t go wrong stopping into almost any local café for great coffee and fresh pastries.
