Curator’s statement
Lake Tahoe holds a special place in my heart because it’s been the backdrop of cherished family memories for over 40 years. Our family of five has spent countless summers and winters in our vacation home on the beautiful West Shore, in the charming community of Homewood, California. From hiking scenic trails, skiing the mountain trail to relaxing on sandy beaches, Tahoe offers a perfect mix of adventure and serenity. It’s more than just a destination — it’s a great place where bonds grow stronger.

Things to do in Lake Tahoe

Here are some of the top activities to enjoy on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, no matter the season:
1. Hiking (year-round)
Lake Tahoe is renowned for its breathtaking hiking trails, especially around the West Shore. The trails are diverse and connect across the region, offering everything from forest walks to stunning lake views. Whether it's a spring, summer or fall hike, the quiet, remote trails are perfect for escaping into nature. Plus, my dog loves to join me on these adventures year-round!
2. Boating (summer)
Lake Tahoe’s clear, blue waters are ideal for a day on the lake. Whether you rent a boat, bring your own or take a guided tour, spending a day boating across the lake is a must. The views are spectacular, and the peaceful surroundings make it a memorable experience.
Both Sunnyside Resort and Obexer's Boat Company are great spots to rent boats and enjoy the lake.
Sunnyside Resort: Located on the West Shore, Sunnyside offers boat rentals with easy access to the lake. Whether you're looking for a pontoon for a leisurely day or a speedboat for more adventurous water sports, Sunnyside has a variety of options. Plus, after a day on the water, you can enjoy a meal at their lakeside restaurant, offering delicious food with a view of the lake.
Obexer's Boat Company: Situated in nearby Homewood, Obexer’s offers boat rentals and is known for its friendly service and convenient location on the lake. It’s a great spot to rent a boat or paddleboard, with easy access to some of the most beautiful areas of the West Shore. Their rentals are perfect for exploring the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe, and they even offer kayak and paddleboard rentals for a more tranquil experience.
Both locations provide beautiful views of the lake and are ideal for a fun day out on the water!
3. Biking (summer)
The West Shore and surrounding areas boast some fantastic biking trails, offering everything from scenic lakeside routes to more challenging mountain paths. It's a great way to explore the area, get some exercise, and take in the beautiful views. Avid bikers bike the entire lake in one day.
4. Running (summer)
If you're into running, Lake Tahoe offers countless scenic routes. From easy lakeside paths to challenging mountain trails, the area’s natural beauty is perfect for any runner. The fresh, cool air makes every run a joy!
5. Swimming (summer)
While Lake Tahoe’s waters are cold, there’s nothing like a swim in one of the clearest lakes in the world. The refreshing chill is invigorating, and swimming in the pristine lake is one of the most enjoyable ways to cool off during summer.
6. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (summer)
These water sports are perfect for a peaceful day on the lake. The calm waters of Lake Tahoe provide an ideal environment for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, allowing you to explore the shoreline at your own pace while taking in the stunning surroundings. If you launch from the public beach at Chamberlands, you can kayak or SUP to Sugar Pine and back in about an hour.
7. Snowshoeing (winter)
During the winter, the West Shore transforms into a winter wonderland, perfect for snowshoeing. There are plenty of trails to explore, offering peaceful, snow-covered landscapes where you can enjoy the quiet beauty of the area. It's a great way to stay active while surrounded by nature.
8. Skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort (winter)
Homewood is a hidden gem on the West Shore. Though it is closed for the 2024-2025 season, it’s worth mentioning for when it reopens. Its quieter, less crowded slopes are perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed skiing experience with breathtaking views of the lake.
9. Skiing at Palisades Tahoe (winter)
Located just a 20-minute drive from the West Shore, Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) offers world-class skiing and snowboarding. Known for its challenging slopes and vibrant après-ski scene, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy a thrilling day on the slopes.
10. Cozy cabin time with a fire (Winter)
After a day of skiing or snowshoeing, there’s nothing better than retreating to a cozy cabin with a roaring fire and a good book or Netflix. The serene atmosphere of the West Shore makes it the perfect place to unwind, enjoy family time and recharge for the next day.
These activities offer a well-rounded experience of what makes Lake Tahoe so special, whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation.
Places to eat and drink in Lake Tahoe

The West Shore Lake Tahoe offers a variety of dining options to suit every taste. Here are some of my top picks:
1. Dog & Bear Tavern (Tahoma)
A cozy local favorite known for its pub-style meals, pizza and beer, Dog & Bear Tavern is perfect for a relaxed meal after a day of hiking or boating
2. Spoon (Tahoe City)
A small farm-to-table restaurant offering fresh, seasonal dishes. It’s great for brunch or dinner, and you can bring your own wine to complement the meal.
3. Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge (West Shore)
This lakeside spot is ideal for both food and views. Enjoy comfort food and upscale dishes on the patio during summer or by the fire in winter.
4. Shady Side
A hidden gem with a casual vibe, serving tacos and drinks. It's a great local spot to unwind.
5. Firesign Café (Tahoe City)
Known for its excellent coffee, fresh breakfast options and seasonal dishes. The outdoor seating makes it a perfect place to enjoy the fresh air and people-watch.
6. Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet
A must-visit for fresh pastries, cakes, cookies and satisfying sandwiches. It’s a great stop for breakfast, lunch, or a takeaway treat.
Each of these spots offers a unique experience, from lakeside dining to cozy cafés, all set in beautiful locations on the West Shore. Whether you're dining with family, friends or your dog, these places are highlights of the Lake Tahoe area.
