Curator’s statement
Highlands and Cashiers, North Carolina, feel like a second home to me. I’ve been coming here since 2004, and my family built our mountain house in 2009, which made it even more special. I love that you get the best of both worlds here—amazing restaurants and shops, mixed with some of the most beautiful hiking in the Southeast. It’s one of those places that feels both relaxing and a little adventurous at the same time.

Need to know
Highlands and Cashiers sit at a higher elevation, so temperatures are usually cooler than surrounding areas (even in summer), making it a great escape from the heat—just bring a light layer for evenings.
Reservations are highly recommended for dinner, especially in peak seasons like summer and fall foliage.
Cell service can be spotty in certain areas, so plan ahead with directions if you’re heading out hiking. And lastly, don’t rush it—this is a place best enjoyed at a slower pace, whether you’re exploring the trails, browsing the shops, or lingering over a great meal.
