Advisor - A Nature Lover's Guide to Aspen
Curator’s statement

While the glitz and glam of Aspen sometimes overshadows the natural beauty, there are few places in the US that have the same access to both unparalleled outdoor activities and food. I grew up going to Aspen as a kid and have seen it change a lot over the last couple decades, but at its heart it’s still a mountain town with awe-inspiring views. There is nothing quite like starting your day with a sweaty hike up Cathedral Lake or ski down Highland Bowl and ending it with a fantastic dinner and luxurious stay.

Things to do in Aspen

Hiking Grizzly Lake

In the summer

  • Hike Cathedral Lake: Maroon Bells is the classic tourist hike, but for fewer crowds and equally stunning views, take the trek up to Cathedral Lake for an otherworldly view.

  • Hike Grizzly Lake Trail: For those who want an extra workout, check out this trail with iconic Colorado views. It’s a long drive on a dirt road, but that means way fewer crowds, which is worth it for those up for the challenge.

  • Pine Creek Cookhouse: Finish a hike with a delicious lunch at Pinecreek Cookhouse (or take a sleigh ride there in the winter!). This establishment is part of the historic Ashcroft mining area (now a real ghost town). It is a beautiful old log cabin serving wild game and stunning views of the Elk Mountains.

  • Flyfishing: I took my first flyflishing lesson on Roaring Fork and was addicted. This is a great activity to get out of your comfort zone and enjoy nature by spending time in the river.

In the winter

  • Ski the Highlands: Aspen Mountain in town is the place to seen and be seen, but the Highlands offer some of the best terrain in the area. For advanced skiers, a trip down the Highland Bowl is one to remember.

  • Ski Ruthies on Aspen Mountain: For more intermediate skiers, Ruthies offers iconic views of Aspen and is one of the classic runs down Aspen Mountain. This is my dad’s favorite run, and I have lots of great memories doing big wide turns on this run growing up, so it’s great to enjoy as a family.

  • Visit Explorer Books: When you’re done skiing for the day and looking for a break, head to this cozy book store in an old Victorian home. It also houses a cute cafe with A+ hot chocolate.

Places to eat & drink in Aspen

  • Cache Cache: An Aspen staple that has been around for decades. It has a warm atmosphere and an upscale American menu.

  • French Alpine Bistro: Cozy fondue restaurant with a cute alpine patio. It’s a great place to enjoy on a brisk fall day or warm up in the winter.

  • Ajax Tavern: Another Aspen classic. Worth a stop for the burger and people-watching at the base of Aspen Mountain.

  • Paradise Bakery: I trend toward the classics in Aspen, and this is another mainstay that’s the perfect place to pick up a croissant or breakfast sandwich before heading out for the day.

  • J Bar at Hotel Jerome: The atmosphere here is A+. This 19th-century building has been lovingly restored but has kept its historic charm—and the bar is the perfect place to soak in the old Western architecture over a drink.

Need to know

Flying direct to Aspen is the most efficient if you're trying to maximize your time there, but if you have the time, the drive from Denver up Independence Pass is worth it in the summer.
