Curator’s statement
I have a long history with Charlottesville and have been coming here for over thirty years. I also attended The University of Virginia and inevitably moved back to the area in 2018 to work in the wine industry. C’ville simply pulls you back. It is a vibrant college town, steeped in history and surrounded by the exquisite natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is also teeming with graceful architecture, great restaurants and an overwhelming array of breweries, distilleries and wineries. Come visit for a weekend and you’ll want to stay for a lifetime.

Things to do in Charlottesville

Blue Ridge Parkway: Take a drive through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains or enjoy the short hike up to Humpback Rocks for a spectacular view of the valley below.
Blue Ridge Tunnel: Grab a flashlight and embark on this super cool hike through a former railway tunnel that was built in the 1850s. The tunnel itself is just shy of a mile long, but the entire trail runs about 4.5 miles round trip. It’s fairly cool inside, so bring a jacket and consider stopping by my go-to for excellent coffee at the nearby Happ.
Chiles Family Orchards: Enjoy seasonal fruits at these lovely, locally owned orchards. Depending on the season, you can pick cherries at Spring Valley, peaches at Chiles or apples atop Carter Mountain. The latter is particularly festive in the fall and offers stunning views of Charlottesville.
Downtown Mall: Stroll down this charming main street in the heart of Charlottesville, the home of over 30 restaurants as well as a variety of local shops and entertainment venues.
Monticello: This UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of former President Thomas Jefferson is an absolute gem to behold. Immerse yourself in history as you enjoy the beautiful architecture, gardens and trails. Consider the Behind the Scenes Tour and be sure to peruse the shop on your way out.
Montpelier: Although Monticello is my personal favorite, the home of former President James Madison is well worth a visit. Explore the historic gardens and grounds and then stop for lunch at the lovely Market at Grelen.
University of Virginia: No visit to Charlottesville would be complete without a visit to Mr. Jefferson’s University, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the beauty and architecture present everywhere on Grounds, from the Academical Village and its iconic Rotunda to the Pavillion Gardens hidden behind serpentine walls.
Visit a local winery: Enjoy a tasting or maybe a tour at one of over 40 wineries in the Monticello AVA, which was named Wine Enthusiast’s 2023 Wine Region of the Year. I recommend the following:
- Michael Shaps Wineworks: A bit off the beaten path, but Michael makes some of the best wine in the state. He also has a winery in Meursault and offers tastings of his French wines as well.
- Trump Winery: Whatever your political leanings may be, head winemaker Jonathan Wheeler makes the best sparkling in Virginia. The tasting room is also lovely and affords beautiful views.
- Veritas Vineyards: This is one of the older and more established wineries, with a lovely tasting room in the beautiful Afton. Enoy the standout Sauvignon Blanc or sparkling along with gourmet snacks from the onsite terrace.
Places to eat & drink in Charlottesville

Alley Light: This small French restaurant is hidden down a little side street off the Downtown Mall. There is no sign, but look for a single streetlamp above a wooden a door and make your way upstairs for a well-crafted cocktail. Go early to snag a seat at the bar, which are available on afirst come, first served basis.
Bodos Bagels: A Charlottesville institution serving New York style water bagels for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are three locations, so feel free to try them all… and don’t be deterred if there’s a line, it moves quickly and Bodos is always worth the wait.
Crush Pad Wines: Brought to you by the wonderful team behind Bang, Bizou and Luce (all good choices), this wine and bubbles bar on the Downtown mall is a great place to enjoy a glass accompanied by small bites or boards. They also have a nice selection of bottles available for purchase.
Guajiros Miami Eatery: A delicious choice for breakfast or brunch, this Miami-style eatery is also a lot of fun. The owners are fantastic people and really know how to make a damn good Cuban coffee. Try the Hands on Breakfast with a Café Con Leche.
Ivy Inn: Charlottesville’s best fine dining experience set in a lovely 19th century house. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends.
Marie Bette: European-style bakery and café with amazing pastries, sandwiches and desserts. Be sure to try an everything prezzant and the petit canelés. The two locations are open for breakfast and lunch.
Maru Korean Restaurant and Bar: A great little spot for super tasty and authentic Korean food. Located on the Downtown Mall and open Thursday–Monday for lunch and dinner.
Smyrna: Top-notch restaurant serving authentic Mediterranean cuisine and great cocktails. Try the meze trio and delicious manti dumplings.
Tavola: My personal favorite. Simple yet delicious classic Italian that never fails to impress. Highlights include the burrata, eggplant parmesan and adult affogato for dessert. Book ahead and try to get a table in the main dining area or at the chef’s bar.
Vu Noodles: Charming little lunch spot for tasty Vietnamese dishes and noodle bowls. Vegan and vegetarian options are available. Order online or at the walk-up window and enjoy a Vietnamese coffee while you wait.
