Advisor - Savor the Journey with Holland America Alaskan Cruises
Curator’s statement

Holland America has been cruising in Alaska longer than Alaska has been a state—and it shows. The company has built strong relationships with local suppliers, ensuring that the food is always fresh and reflective of the region. Holland America is also known for having the best docking locations, often the closest to town, and the longest time in port. This makes shore excursions easy and stress-free. Walks into town are short, and it’s often simple to pop back to your room to grab or drop off a jacket. The staff goes out of their way to make your experience enjoyable. They greet you with a smile and are always ready to help.

Things to do in port

Create your own signature infused spirit at Uncharted Distillery in Ketchikan.

Juneau

  • Whale-watching: You’re almost guaranteed to see whales.

  • Helicopter & dog-sledding adventure: Fly to a glacier and enjoy a sled ride with huskies. These tours visit stunning glacier areas where the dogs spend their summer. It’s a more scenic and authentic experience than the less expensive wheeled cart rides on dirt trails.

Skagway

  • Canoe on Chilkoot Lake (near Haines): In July and August, the lake fills with salmon returning to spawn, attracting bears and bald eagles.

  • Drive to the Yukon: Rent a car and explore where gold miners once searched for treasure. Be sure to stop in charming small towns. Don’t forget your passport—you’ll cross between the US and Canada.

Ketchikan

  • Photo safari: Discover the town through a professional photographer’s perspective. Learn how to turn your photos into frame-worthy art, whether you’re using a phone or a DSLR.

  • Uncharted Distillery: Learn how spirits are made, then infuse your own under the guidance of a local Alaskan. It’s a hands-on way to experience both craft distilling and local culture.

Places to eat & drink in port

Tracey’s Crab Shack in Juneau is famous for a reason—their king crab is delicious!

On the Koningsdam

  • Pinnacle Grill: Enjoy a high-end steakhouse experience at sea. The filet mignon is so tender it practically melts with a fork.

  • Rudi’s Sel de Mer: Delight in elegant French cuisine. Be adventurous and try the escargot—you won’t regret it.

  • Dutch Café: Open all day for espresso drinks and baked goods. Don’t miss the chocolate croissant—it’s wonderfully decadent.

  • Crow’s Nest: A scenic spot with panoramic views, perfect for a drink any time of day.

  • Tamarind: A peaceful lounge with a view, ideal for quiet moments and pre-dinner cocktails.

  • The Retreat: Private cabanas with food and drink service, including breakfast. A luxurious and serene way to enjoy your day.

Ashore

Juneau

  • Tracey’s Crab Shack: Famous for a reason. Their steamed crab—especially the king crab—is fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The crab bisque is also excellent. A combo runs about $100, but it’s easily shareable between two.

Skagway

  • Skagway Brewing Company: Try a flight of local beers, including the spruce tip brew. Pro tip: Head straight to the bar area—if there’s an open table, you can skip the restaurant line. Food and drinks are the same—the only difference is that you order at the bar.

Ketchikan

  • Uncharted Distillery: Relax on the deck with a creative cocktail made from house-distilled spirits. You can even take a tour and infuse your own gin, vodka, or whiskey.

  • Alaska Legends Cider & Wine: A cozy spot with the vibe of a coffee shop. Offers hard cider, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks, like homemade root beer and ginger beer.

  • Alaska Fish House: Head indoors or to the back patio to enjoy views of fishing boats coming in. The seafood chowder and fish and chips are standouts—the latter is generous enough to share between two or three people.
