Advisor - Coastal Calm: A Guide to the Car-Free Magic of Bald Head Island
Curator’s statement

Bald Head Island is a place where time slows down the moment you step off the ferry. As a car-free sanctuary, it offers a rare opportunity to trade traffic and noise for the sounds of the ocean and maritime forest. This island holds a special place in my heart for its untouched natural beauty and the intentional pace of life that encourages deep relaxation and connection.

Things to do in Bald Head Island, NC

Old Baldy Lighthouse

Cruising the island by golf cart

Since personal cars aren’t allowed, the primary way to explore is by electric golf cart. It is a slow and joyful way to take in the scenery, feel the salt air, and travel between the harbor and the beach at your own pace. Many rental homes include a cart(s), and the tram ride to your accommodation on the island is included in the price of the ferry.

Old Baldy Lighthouse and The Village Chapel

As the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina, Old Baldy offers a glimpse into maritime history and the most stunning panoramic views of the island. The climb involves just over 100 steps plus a ladder with a tight opening, providing a rewarding look at the convergence of the river and the sea. Located just steps away is the picturesque Village Chapel. Its traditional architecture and peaceful forest setting make it a beautiful spot for a quiet visit or a photo while exploring the area.

The Bald Head Island Conservancy

This organization is dedicated to preserving the island and offers wonderful educational programs for all ages. A highlight for families is the island-wide scavenger hunt, which is a fantastic way to engage with the natural surroundings and learn about the local ecosystem. In addition to the hunt, you can visit turtles and snakes at the Environmental Education Center or participate in guided nature walks to see the coastal wildlife up close. Access to certain activities may require a membership or a separate fee, so check their current schedule during your visit.

Kayaking the salt marshes

Navigating the creeks and marshes by kayak or paddleboard allows you to see the island from a different perspective. It is a peaceful way to spot local wildlife, including herons and egrets, in their natural habitat.

Biking or hiking the maritime forest

Miles of paved and unpaved paths wind through the ancient live oaks of the maritime forest. Biking is the best way to feel the island breeze and explore the hidden corners away from the beach. Exploring on foot is the best way to access the quietest hidden corners and appreciate the natural canopy away from the beach.

Beach hopping

Spend your morning on South Beach for calm, kid-friendly waters and your afternoon at East Beach for more active surf. Head to the westernmost beach access to watch the sunset at the end of the day. The transition between the various beach accesses offers a beautiful contrast in coastal environments.

Golf at the Bald Head Island Club

This course is famously beautiful and uniquely challenging due to the coastal winds. Even if you are not a golfer, the club atmosphere is a quintessential part of the island experience. Please note that access to the course and club facilities requires a membership. Many rental properties offer the option to purchase a temporary guest membership, so verify availability through your accommodations to enjoy these amenities.

Places to eat & drink in Bald Head Island, NC

Midway Coffee's egg and avocado toast

  • Midway Coffee: This local favorite is a must for a delicious breakfast or a mid-morning snack. I highly recommend the egg and avocado toast, which features sliced egg, avocado, bacon, Boursin cheese, and everything seasoning on fresh sourdough bread. It is the perfect fuel before a day of exploring the island. In addition to their coffee and breakfast items, they also serve ice cream, making it a popular stop for a sweet treat on a warm day.

  • Copper’s Wood Fired Pizza: Located inside the Maritime Market, this spot serves incredible artisan pizzas. The Honeycup Pizza is a standout choice, featuring marinara sauce layered with Manchego cheese, Italian sausage, and banana peppers, all finished with a drizzle of honey. The staff is very accommodating, they happily swapped the house-made tomato basil base for olive oil and fresh garlic for us.

  • Maritime Market: This is the primary resource for all of your grocery and household needs while on the island. In addition to a full selection of fresh produce and pantry staples, the market offers a deli and prepared foods perfect for beach picnics. Since the island has no traditional stores, this central hub is essential for stocking your vacation rental with everything you might require.

  • Jailhouse Provisions: This casual eatery offers a relaxed atmosphere and a menu full of coastal favorites. It is a fantastic spot to grab a burger or fish tacos after a morning at the beach. The outdoor seating is perfect for families who want to enjoy a meal while soaking up the island sun.

  • Mike’s Bites: Located on the Bald Head Island Conservancy campus, this seasonal walk-up window is a favorite for those spending time at East Beach. It is the island’s best spot for Italian ice, hot dogs, and fresh wraps. The casual atmosphere and quick service make it a perfect pit stop for a cool treat or a beach-side lunch while exploring the natural side of the island.

  • Bald Head Bottle: Nestled within The Esplanade along Maritime Way, this quaint wine shop and bar is a cherished spot for both residents and visitors. It offers a curated selection of wines from around the globe, with a special emphasis on small organic producers committed to responsible farming practices. You can enjoy a glass of wine or a craft beer with a charcuterie board in their inviting indoor or outdoor seating areas, which are both kid and pet friendly.

Need to know

  • Island transportation and logistics: The island is entirely car-free, so your primary mode of transportation will be electric golf carts or bicycles. When you book your ferry departing from Deep Point Marina & Yacht Club, be sure to coordinate your tram reservations simultaneously. The tram is the island’s “taxi” system that transports you and your luggage from the ferry terminal to your rental home. It is complementary with your ferry ticket. There are limited spots on the tram, so keep this in mind. Also, because there is only one grocery store on the island, many visitors find it helpful to place a grocery delivery order with the Maritime Market in advance of their arrival.

  • Private club access and amenities: Bald Head Island features two private clubs that offer enhanced amenities for visitors. Access is determined by your rental property, as many homes include the option to purchase a temporary guest membership. It is helpful to note that most maintained, public access swimming pools on the island are located within these private clubs. The Bald Head Island Club serves as a versatile social and athletic hub, providing access to golf, tennis, pickleball, a fitness center, and a pool complex along with various dining venues. On the eastern end of the island, the Shoals Club at the Point of Cape Fear offers a more relaxed beachside experience featuring a pool, fitness facilities, and coastal dining overlooking the Atlantic.

  • Howl at the Moon: This monthly beach party is an island tradition that occurs with each full moon. It is a casual, community gathering at East Beach (Access 39) that kicks off just before sunset. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own beverages, a beach chair, and an appetizer to share. A highlight of the evening is the bagpiper, who plays as the sun sets and the moon rises over the Atlantic. Once the moon is visible, the group breaks into a collective “howl” to celebrate the occasion. It is a fantastic way to meet both locals and fellow visitors in a relaxed, festive atmosphere.
