Curator’s statement
Churchill is a remote and beautiful retreat from the world, accessible only by train or plane. Every summer, 50,000 beluga whales come here to frolic, feed, and give birth, while polar bears wander off of the ice to hang out until it's cold enough to go back to sea. If you're lucky, the Aurora Borealis might grace you with a visit as well!

Things to do in Churchill

A healthy female polar bear spotted on our tundra buggy tour
Kayaking with belugas: Such a delightful experience! Spend two hours paddling near and around friendly, inquisitive whales.
Paddleboarding with belugas: Surround yourself with friendly beluga whales as you paddle amongst them—make sure to keep your feet!
Zodiac with belugas: Take a zodiac (a kind of inflatable speedboat) out into the Hudson Bay to get up close and personal with thousands of beluga whales.
Tundra buggy ride: Venture out into the marsh in a large, elevated buggy in search of polar bears and other wildlife.
Sign up for the Northern Lights call list with Discover Churchill: If the lights come out on a given night, you'll get a call and they'll pick you up and take you out to a great place to see them.
Hiking: Wander out on foot to enjoy the scenery and the local sites. If you're lucky, you might also spot a bear!
Helicopter ride: It's magical to float above Churchill, seeing the many beluga pods in the bay and, most likely, bears along the coast.
Places to eat & drink in Churchill

Tasty fish and flatbread at the Ptarmigan
Asian food truck: We were shocked to find a food truck offering dim sum (one of our favorite things) in this tiny town! The truck is available daily and offers free delivery.
Ptarmigan: The newest restaurant in town, offering a good menu. One of the only places open for lunch!
Tundra Pub: A classic pub atmosphere with a varied menu, including butter chicken and burgers.
Lazy Bear Lodge: Fascinating decor (including a massive polar bear) and a small menu.
Seaport Hotel: One of the only other places open for lunch, with a basic menu and friendly staff.
Need to know
Make reservations for dining, since there aren't many restaurants and they may get packed (especially with tour groups). Churchill proper has so much to offer; if you have extra time, check out Churchill Wild's lodges further north, which offer an even more exclusive polar bear experience. Churchill can be accessed by plane or train; plane is expensive, but the train takes almost two full days and isn't particularly scenic. It's possible to rent a car in Churchill, but do so with caution; the roads are rough and there isn't cell service in many places. The summer is great due to belugas and the beautiful purple fireweed; autumn is better for bear and Aurora Borealis viewing.
