Curator’s statement
One may not think of going to Arizona for the holidays—with the lack of snow, cold, and gray skies that are typical of the season (at least here in the Northeast!), it seems counterintuitive. But—Scottsdale is one of the few exceptions. The golden-hour sunsets combined with a pop of holiday lights, a fire pit, and a hot toddy warms the soul and really brings the meaning of this time of year to heart. I have had the pleasure of spending a few holidays in this area and it has always been fantastic!

Things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

During the holidays, one must visit the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess's “Christmas at the Princess.” With a stunning arrangement of lights (Instagramable for sure!) along the property paths, booths to stop and get food or a drink, and the famous ice rink (for skating and cocoa of course!), it's wonderful for anyone who wants to feel that Christmas spirit. Pro tip: Have a pre-visit al fresco dinner at the Fairmont's very own La Hacienda and then grab some spiked hot cocoa or coffee to start your light show journey!
Take an open-air golf cart holiday lights tour with JoyRidesAZ through Old Town to get a real feel for the area and of course view all the amazing holiday lights.
First Friday Art Walk (holiday style): While this is technically in downtown Phoenix, this event is one of the oldest in the country and gathers vendors, musicians, and artists of all varieties out onto the streets (many of which are closed off to traffic) for an evening. The essence of downtown Phoenix’s arts and culture can be seen, felt, heard, and tasted throughout more than 70 galleries, venues, art-related spaces, and surrounding bars, restaurants, and food trucks. You will be sure to find a holiday gift to bring back home!
Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center is one of those off-the-beaten-path experiences that still, to this day, I look fondly on. While this is not holiday themed, it is a must-see. SWCC is one of Arizona’s sanctuaries for rescued native wildlife. SWCC rehabs and releases these creatures or provides sanctuary for those that cannot be put back into their natural habitat. Great for families, couples, and kids.

Need to know
The Scottsdale/Paradise Valley/Phoenix area is also known for excellent golf. One public course that stands out is Gray Hawk, open to everyone, with two course layouts. Scottsdale is an excellent launchpad for exploration outside of the city limits. Stay a few days on the front or back of a trip to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, or Tonto Natural Bridge State Park.
