Curator’s statement
For scuba divers, Cozumel is a true playground: legendary reefs, spectacular wall dives, and a coral population that remains vibrant and full of life. Nurse sharks and sea turtles are frequent dive companions, while intricate coral formations create thrilling swim-throughs and dramatic drop-offs. Many divers resign themselves to dive-centric hotels and rental condos that lack comfort or atmosphere—this island offers so much more—if you know how to experience it right. With moderately sized resorts (not overwhelming mega-resorts) that balance dive access with elevated amenities, Cozumel delivers world-class reefs, small-island charm, and exceptional food in a setting that blends adventure and indulgence.

Things to do in Cozumel

Closing out the afternoon in the pool at the Presidente InterContinental with a fresh margarita.
Dive Cozumel’s famous reefs: Experienced divers will find Cozumel’s drift conditions exhilarating and the variety of sites endlessly rewarding. New divers are also well-served, with an abundance of PADI- and SSI-certified shops and instructors offering Discover Scuba dives or open water certification courses in one of the world’s most beautiful classrooms. Your dive-obsessed Fora Travel Advisor may even be able to connect you with a private dive guide for a bespoke, luxury experience.
Explore downtown Cozumel: After the cruise ship crowds depart, downtown transforms into a safe, charming, and walkable area with shops, cafés, and a more local feel.
Beach-hopping the Southern Coast: Spend a day exploring Cozumel’s most stunning beaches, like El Cielo, famous for its impossibly clear water and starfish-strewn sandbar, and Punta Sur, a protected ecological park with unspoiled coastline and a historic lighthouse.
Salty bars & throwback fun: Sometimes the best way to cap off a dive day is with a debrief of the day’s dive adventures over a margarita at a lively institution like Margaritaville or Señor Frog's. It’s pure lowbrow fun—and part of the island’s character.
Places to eat & drink in Cozumel
La Clásica: La Clásica delivers creative dishes that balance refinement with island soul. I still dream about the sushi-inspired coconut shrimp tostadas, shareable braised pork knuckle with charred vegetables and impossibly soft house-made corn tortillas, and phenomenal craft mezcal cocktails. It’s a can’t-miss spot that proves Cozumel’s dining scene extends well beyond the usual tourist menus.
Kondesa: Upscale Mexican cuisine served in a lush, Insta-worthy garden makes Kondesa a favorite for both foodies and design lovers. The atmosphere feels festive, especially on live-music nights, while the small but thoughtful list of terrific Mexican wines will impress discerning oenophiles. It’s the perfect blend of ambiance and culinary creativity.
Ix Kool: For a deep dive into Yucatecan flavors, Ix Kool is a revelation. Don’t miss the pipián — a spicy, velvety salsa made from toasted pepitas—along with other regional specialties that showcase the culinary heritage of the area. The experience is both educational and delicious.
Need to know
My favorite hotels & resorts
Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa
A stylishly renovated midcentury-modern icon, the Presidente is the gold standard for luxury stays on the island. Moderately sized (not a mega-resort), it offers a beautiful, protected sandy beach with luxurious wooden beach huts perched over the water, two stunning pools, an onsite dive shop where boats pull up directly to the pier, and an amazing breakfast spread. Add a world-class spa and an active tennis program, and this resort feels as well-rounded as it is dive-friendly.
The Explorean Cozumel
For travelers craving intimacy and tranquility, The Explorean is a chic, adults-only boutique hideaway. Nestled in a manicured jungle setting across from the beach, its stylish rooms and serene infinity pool feel worlds away. Guests can mix themselves a post-dive cocktail at the honor bar or savor inventive Mayan-inspired cuisine that feels both authentic and elevated. Staying here also grants full access to the beachfront and amenities of its sister property, the Fiesta Americana.
Fiesta Americana Cozumel
Fiesta Americana is ideal for adult travelers and families alike, with a laid-back, non-Cancun vibe. This all-inclusive resort features an inviting pool with a swim-up bar, multiple restaurants, and a pier where dive boats can pick you up each morning. Moderately sized and unpretentious, it balances comfort with convenience for travelers who want both diving and relaxation without the excess of a mega-resort.
Secrets Aura Cozumel
Adults-only and all-inclusive, Secrets Aura balances comfort with convenience for divers. A private pier and on-site PADI dive center make it easy to get straight to the reefs—it’s the most southerly of the four properties—while suites (including swim-ups) keep things stylish. The beach is wide and swimmable, and evenings often bring live entertainment—a nice perk for those who want more than just post-dive relaxation.
A bonus of these four hotels is their southerly location: Situated a short drive from downtown, they’re far closer to the island’s premier dive sites, like the legendary Palancar Reef. This makes the most of your day, allowing that extra time to linger at the breakfast buffet or make it back for ample post-dive poolside lounging.
(Tip: Not all properties on Cozumel have true beach access—talk to your Fora Travel Advisor about the resorts with the best stretches of sand for your style of stay.)
Direct flights from nine major US hubs and an easy ferry from Playa del Carmen make getting here simple. Once you arrive, Cozumel’s world-class reefs, small-island charm, and excellent food scene set the tone for an unforgettable stay.
