Day 1: Arrival and local fare

Piazza Navona is one of Rome's most beautiful and famous squares

After freshening up in your hotel, head out to Ginger Sapori e Salute on Via Borgognana, a nice and bright casual café/restaurant serving salads, pizzas and healthy snacks.

You can first take in the twin churches on Piazza del Popolo, before heading towards the Spanish Steps and walking along the chic Via Condotti. After lunch, you can meander down towards the Pantheon and the Trevi fountain, with a gelato or espresso stop along the way (Giolitti’s is where it’s at!). I would end with dinner at either Colline Emiliane or at La Matriciana, a Roman icon where the pasta all’amatriciana is a must!

Day 2: Roman sites

The one and only Colosseum

Spend the morning visiting Villa Borghese, with its beautiful gardens, gallery and panoramic views (you’ll need to buy tickets online beforehand). Marvel at the multiple Caravaggios and picturesque gardens.

In the afternoon, visit the Roman Forum and Colosseum. The scale of these monuments and how integrated into modern Rome they are is truly mind-boggling!

I would then finish the day with a hands-on cooking class, maybe making pasta, pizza or tiramisù — or all three if you're lucky!

Day 3: Vatican and pasta

The aperitivi at Hotel de Russie are the epitome of chic

Head over to the Vatican for a morning guided tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica.

After that, head over to the Trastevere area for lunch and a stroll. You could try the Cacio e Pepe pasta at Taverna Trilussa, or if you’re in the mood for some linguine alle vongole, then try Osteria der Belli!

Across the river from Trastevere, you could pop into Neve di Latte for a gelato. Stroll up towards Piazza Navona and Castel Sant’Angelo, before heading back to your hotel before dinner or walking over to the Hotel de Russie for a very chic aperitivo. If you like the vibrant vibe of Trastevere, you could head back and have dinner at Trattoria da Teo. Or you could head down to the Testaccio area and have dinner at Perilli. After that, walk over to the Pyramid of Cestius, which is beautifully lit up at night. There is a taxi stand right next to it, if you are fading and need a quick return to your hotel!

Need to know

While in Rome, don't forget to try some fried artichokes, as well as some spaghetti cacio e pepe!
