Day 1: Welcome to Auckland

Landing / landscape | Taken by me
After a long but exciting nonstop flight from Los Angeles with Delta, we’ve finally arrived in Auckland! Immigration is swift, but don’t forget—biosecurity is serious business here. Remember to leave any food items behind.
Once we’re through, we head to the Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour, our home for the next few nights. This beautiful hotel is right in the city center, making it the perfect launchpad for our adventures.
After checking in and freshening up, let’s explore the area! Just a short walk away, you’ll find a fantastic array of restaurants. If you’re craving fresh seafood, Soul Bar & Bistro is a must-visit, offering a lively atmosphere and delicious dishes. For something with a bit of a kick, head over to Mamak for some amazing Malaysian food. And if you just want a cozy café vibe, La Voie is perfect for a relaxed bite or a good cup of coffee.
As the day winds down, take a stroll along the waterfront. The views are stunning, and the energy of the city is infectious. This first day sets the tone for what’s to come—a blend of comfort, culture, and culinary delights.
Day 2: Exploring the wonders of Auckland

Mount Eden
After a restful night at the Sofitel, we’re ready to dive into the vibrant energy of Auckland!
Start our day with an amazing breakfast at La Marée. This charming café is known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and delicious coastal-inspired dishes. Treat yourself to their famous eggs benedict or a delightful smoothie açaí bowl—the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.
Let’s hit the streets! Here are some must-visit spots to make the most of your day in Auckland.
Sky Tower: Kick off your adventure with a visit to the iconic Sky Tower. Standing at 328 meters, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and beyond. If you’re feeling brave, you can even try the SkyJump!
Auckland War Memorial Museum: Next, head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the stunning Auckland Domain. This museum offers rich insights into New Zealand’s history, culture, and natural environment. Don’t miss the Maori and Pacific Islander exhibits—they’re fascinating!
Viaduct Harbour: After soaking up some history, stroll over to Viaduct Harbour. This lively waterfront area is perfect for people-watching and offers a variety of cafés and eateries. Grab a coffee or a light snack and soak in the beautiful views of the marina.
Wynyard Quarter: Just a short walk away, the Wynyard Quarter is a thriving urban space with parks, markets, and restaurants. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, check out the local food market for some delicious street food!
Auckland Art Gallery: For some culture, make your way to the Auckland Art Gallery. It houses an impressive collection of New Zealand and international art. The architecture of the building itself is a work of art!
Mount Eden: Finally, cap off your day with a short hike up Mount Eden. This volcanic cone offers stunning views of the city and a chance to reflect on the day’s adventures. The sunset from here is simply magical.
Day 3: A taste of Waiheke Island

Ferry from Auckland to Waiheke island
Wine not? Today, we’re heading to one of New Zealand’s hidden gems: Waiheke Island! Known for its stunning vineyards and breathtaking landscapes, this paradise is just a short ferry ride from Auckland. As we glide over the sparkling waters, excitement fills the air—today is all about indulging in some of the best wines the region has to offer.
Once we arrive, our guide is ready to whisk us away to three of Waiheke’s finest wineries. First up is Cable Bay Vineyard. Nestled on a hillside, this place offers not just fantastic wines but also spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. Enjoy a tasting flight here, and don’t hesitate to ask about their top picks—each sip tells a story!
Next, we’re off to Mudbrick Vineyard. With its charming, rustic vibe and beautifully landscaped gardens, this winery feels like a slice of heaven. Take in the stunning views as you sample their award-winning wines paired with some delicious cheese—it’s a match made in heaven!
Finally, we make our way to Stony Ridge Vineyard, known for its rich reds and relaxed atmosphere. As we sip on their exquisite wines, take a moment to soak in the tranquil surroundings. The laid-back vibe here is perfect for unwinding and reflecting on the beautiful day.
As the afternoon sun begins to set, and the golden hues of the sky reflect off the vineyards, you’ll realize that today has been more than just a wine tour; it’s been an experience of connection, beauty, and taste. After a delightful day of wine tasting, we’ll catch the ferry back to Auckland, filled with memories and maybe a bottle or two to take home. Cheers to a wonderful day on Waiheke!
Days 4–7: The scenic road to Wellington

Hobbiton set
After an incredible time in Auckland, it’s time to hit the road! We’re setting off on a memorable journey to Wellington, making some fantastic stops along the way. Buckle up—this road trip promises breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences!
Day 4: Auckland to Matamata (Hobbiton)
Morning: As we leave Auckland, the excitement builds for our first stop: Hobbiton in Matamata! This enchanting movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is a must-see. As we wander through the lush hills, we’ll snap photos in front of the iconic Hobbit holes and enjoy a guided tour that brings the magic of Middle-earth to life. Don’t forget to stop by the Green Dragon Inn for a refreshing beverage!
Afternoon: After immersing ourselves in the Hobbiton experience, we’ll explore the charming town of Matamata. Check out local shops or grab a bite at a café. The laid-back vibe is a perfect way to soak in the rural beauty of New Zealand.
Evening: We’ll find a cozy spot to stay in Waikato for the night. This region is known for its stunning landscapes and lush farmland. Depending on our energy levels, we might explore nearby attractions, like the Waitomo Caves, famous for their glowworms.
Day 5: Waikato to Waitomo to Ohakune
Morning: After breakfast, we’re off to Waitomo Caves. The guided tour through the caves will leave us in awe of the stunning stalactites and stalagmites, and of course, the magical glowworm grotto is a must-see. It feels like stepping into another world!
Afternoon: Next, we’ll hop back in the car and make our way to Whakarewarewa, known for its geothermal activity and rich Maori culture. Here, we can explore the thermal parks and maybe even catch a cultural performance.
Evening: After a day filled with adventure, we’ll drive to Ohakune. This charming town is a great base for exploring the surrounding mountains. If we have time, we can take a short hike in the Tongariro National Park—the scenery is absolutely breathtaking!
Day 6: Ohakune to Wellington
Morning: Before we head to Wellington, let’s enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Ohakune. The town is famous for its carrots, so keep an eye out for some quirky carrot-themed souvenirs!
Afternoon: As we drive towards Wellington, we might stop at Mount Ruapehu for some stunning views or a quick hike. The landscape here is incredible, with snow-capped peaks that create a picturesque backdrop.
Evening: Finally, we’ll arrive in Wellington, the capital city.
Day 7: Exploring Wellington
Morning: Start the day with a visit to the Te Papa Tongarewa museum, where we can dive deep into New Zealand’s culture and history. The exhibits are engaging and interactive, making it a fun experience for everyone.
Afternoon: Next, let’s take a ride on the Wellington Cable Car to the botanical gardens. The views from the top are stunning, and wandering through the gardens is a lovely way to relax.
Evening: Fly to stunning Queenstown.
Days 8–12: Exploring Queenstown’s wonders

Queenstown, often referred to as the Adventure Capital of New Zealand, is a stunning resort town nestled between the Southern Alps and Lake Wakatipu. With its breathtaking scenery, vibrant atmosphere, and endless outdoor activities, Queenstown is a paradise for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. Here’s a detailed itinerary for your time in this beautiful destination!
Day 8: Wine and dine day
Start your Queenstown adventure with a day dedicated to its acclaimed wineries.
Morning: After breakfast, head to Amisfield Winery. Known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, this vineyard also boasts a lovely restaurant where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch amidst picturesque views.
Afternoon: Next, visit Ayrburn Winery. Their wine tastings are paired with delightful local cheeses, making it a perfect way to savor the region’s flavors. The ambiance here is relaxed, allowing you to soak in the stunning vineyard landscape.
Evening: After a day of indulgence, return to Queenstown and explore the waterfront area. Enjoy dinner at Finz Seafood & Grill, one of the local restaurants, where the menu often features fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. I highly recommend the steamed mussel dumplings to start. It was divine.
Day 9: Horse-riding adventure
Get ready for an unforgettable experience in the stunning landscapes surrounding Queenstown.
Morning: Embark on a memorable horse-riding adventure with High Country Horses in Glenorchy. As you ride through majestic mountains and cross crystal-clear rivers, you’ll be surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in New Zealand.
Afternoon: After your ride, relax and enjoy lunch at the charming Roki Collection Queenstown. Here, Chef Paul Froggatt serves a tasting menu that highlights the essence of the region. This culinary experience will be one of the best meals you’ve had—every dish tells a story!
Evening: Spend the rest of the evening unwinding at your accommodation or taking a stroll around the lakefront, reflecting on the day’s incredible adventures.
Day 10: Lord of the Rings experience
Today is all about exploring the magic of Middle-earth.
Morning: Join a full-day Lord of the Rings tour with Nomad Safaris. This immersive experience will take you to iconic filming locations, including breathtaking mountains and lush valleys. Dress up in costumes for some fun photos in the stunning landscapes!
Afternoon: Continue your adventure through Paradise, where you’ll see the striking scenery that brought the films to life. The guides are knowledgeable and will share fascinating insights about the filming process.
Evening: After a day filled with adventure, head to Arrowtown. Established during the 1862 gold rush, this historic town is charming and picturesque. Explore the quaint streets and enjoy dinner at Bianca by Giovi for a truly authentic Italian
Day 11: Exploring Queenstown
Take a day to fully immerse yourself in all that Queenstown has to offer.
Morning: Start your day with a scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu. The views of the Remarkables mountain range from the water are simply stunning.
Afternoon: Spend some time shopping and exploring the local boutiques. Queenstown has a vibrant arts scene, and you’ll find unique crafts and artworks to take home.
Evening: For dinner, consider trying Rātā Restaurant. You must try the bluff octopus to start and for the main, big glory bay salmon.
Day 12: Preparing for Tekapo
Driving in New Zealand is straightforward and enjoyable, with spectacular views along the way.
Evening: Head to Tekapo for the next leg of your adventure. This charming town is known for its stunning lake and starry nights—perfect for winding down after your Queenstown escapade.
Days 13–15: Enchanting Lake Tekapo

After an amazing drive from Queenstown, we arrived in Lake Tekapo, a true gem of New Zealand. Nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, this stunning area is known for its brilliant turquoise waters, breathtaking mountain scenery, and clear night skies perfect for stargazing. Here’s how to make the most of your two days in this beautiful location.
Day 13: Arrival and exploration
Morning:
Enjoy the scenic drive to Lake Tekapo, making a stop at Lake Pukaki. The stunning views here are a must-see, with the lake’s vibrant blue hues framed by the Southern Alps.
Stop by the Mt. Cook Alpine Shop to grab some fresh salmon—trust me, it’s the best you’ll find! Enjoy a light picnic by the lake, taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Afternoon:
Once you arrive in Lake Tekapo, check into your accommodation with stunning views of the lake. Take a moment to relax and soak in your surroundings.
After settling in, explore the Church of the Good Shepherd. This iconic stone church offers a picturesque setting against the backdrop of the lake and mountains. It’s a perfect photo opportunity!
Evening:
For dinner, head to Kohan Restaurant, known for its fresh Japanese cuisine. Enjoy a delicious meal while gazing out at the lake—it’s a dining experience you won’t forget. The sushi and sashimi are particularly amazing!
After dinner, take a stroll along the lake’s edge. As the sun sets, the colors reflecting off the water create a magical atmosphere.
Day 14: Adventure and relaxation
Morning: Start your day with breakfast at Astro Café, then gear up for a hike on one of the Mount John trails. The Mount John Summit Track is a rewarding hike that offers panoramic views of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains. The trail is well-marked and provides a great opportunity to immerse yourself in nature.
Afternoon: After your hike, consider visiting the Tekapo Springs, where you can relax in thermal pools or indulge in a spa treatment. The views from the hot pools overlooking the lake are truly serene and rejuvenating.
Evening: As night falls, prepare for an incredible stargazing experience. Lake Tekapo is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the best places in the world for stargazing.
Day 15: Departure to Christchurch
Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast while soaking up the last views of Lake Tekapo. Take a final stroll along the lakefront, capturing those last beautiful moments.
Afternoon: Begin your drive to Christchurch. The journey offers stunning scenery, so take your time and enjoy the ride. If you have extra time, consider stopping at some local vineyards along the way for a taste of the renowned wines from the region.
Evening: Arriving in Christchurch, you can relax and unwind before your journey back home. Explore the city’s vibrant atmosphere or if time allows, consider extending your stay to delve deeper into the local wine regions.
