Advisor - London Like A Local
Curator’s statement

Being British but living in the USA, every trip back to England concludes with a few nights in London. As a child, I was lucky to visit a few times a year and as a new graduate, I lived just outside of London for a few years, so I spent a lot of our weekends in London. Yes, the touristy bits of London are lots of fun but I get the most pleasure from spending my time there like a local!

Things to do in London

London has so many markets, each with its own personality

Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason: Afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason is a must if you’re in London and want to treat yourself to a bit of classic British luxury. The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II, is calm and elegant with live piano music and that kind of polished-but-friendly service that makes the whole thing feel really special. The food is just as good as you’d hope — perfect little sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam and some seriously beautiful pastries. The tea selection is huge, and the staff are great at helping you choose something you’ll love. After tea, head downstairs to the food hall to stock up on your favorite blends to take home — because once you’ve had Fortnum’s tea, it’s hard to go back.

A day on the King’s Road: A day on the King’s Road is the perfect way to soak up a bit of West London charm — with a great mix of shopping, history and people-watching. Start at Sloane Square and make sure you stop to collect a coffee to go from my favorite London coffee stop, Party at Pavillion by The Roasting Party and wander your way down past stylish boutiques, cozy cafés and old-school favorites like Peter Jones and the Chelsea Old Town Hall. There’s always something interesting happening, especially if you’re there during the Chelsea Flower Show in May — when the whole area bursts into bloom with incredible floral displays spilling out of shopfronts and streetside installations. Pop into Duke of York Square for lunch or a browse through the Saturday market if you're lucky, and maybe even check out the Saatchi Gallery while you're there. It’s a relaxed, stylish part of the city that always feels a bit like discovering a local secret.

Picnic from Harrods to eat in Hyde Park: One of my favorite London rituals is picking up a picnic from the Harrods Food Hall and heading just a few blocks over to Hyde Park for a laid-back afternoon. The Food Hall is a feast for the senses — rows of counters filled with fresh salads, gourmet sandwiches, cheeses, pastries and more. It’s hard not to go overboard, but totally worth it. Once you’ve stocked up, walk over to the park and find a quiet spot near the Serpentine or under the trees by the Rose Garden. It’s the perfect way to take a break from the bustle of the city — surrounded by locals walking their dogs, kids playing and people stretched out on the grass with a book or a nap. On a sunny day, it’s hard to beat.

Browse London’s markets: London’s markets are some of the best ways to get a feel for the city’s character — each one has its own vibe and specialties. Borough Market is a foodie paradise, packed with artisan cheeses, fresh produce, street food from all over the world and some of the best coffee and pastries around. For vintage lovers and quirky finds, Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill is a classic, especially on Saturdays when antiques stalls line the street. Columbia Road Flower Market is a Sunday morning tradition, overflowing with blooms, greenery and that lively, local energy you only get in East London. And if you’re into fashion or hunting for unique pieces, Spitalfields Market mixes independent designers with art, crafts and great eats in a covered, stylish space. Whether you're after something delicious, beautiful or just fun to browse, there's a market in London for it.

Take in the views for free: One of the best things about London is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy some seriously stunning views. There are a few great free viewing platforms where you can take in the skyline and feel like a tourist (in the best way). The Sky Garden is a favorite — it’s a lush indoor garden at the top of the Walkie Talkie building, and if you book ahead, entry is free. There’s a bar if you want to stay for drinks as the sun sets over the Thames. The Garden at 120, just a few steps away, is a quieter, open-air option with equally gorgeous views and no booking required. For something a bit different, Primrose Hill and Greenwich Park both offer sweeping panoramic views from ground level, especially lovely with a picnic or evening stroll. It’s the perfect way to hit pause and take in the city from above.

Spend time in Kings Cross: The area around King’s Cross has completely transformed in recent years, turning into one of London’s most exciting and walkable neighborhoods. It’s the perfect mix of culture, green space and modern design. Start with a visit to the British Library, home to everything from Shakespeare’s First Folio to handwritten Beatles lyrics — plus rotating exhibitions and a great café. Just around the corner is Granary Square, a buzzy spot with fountains kids can run through in the summer and plenty of outdoor seating. From there, stroll over to Coal Drops Yard, where old Victorian warehouses have been turned into a sleek shopping and dining hub filled with indie boutiques and stylish restaurants. You’ll also find quiet corners like Gasholder Park right by the canal, perfect for a break in the sun. There’s even a fun little floating bookshop on a canal boat! It’s a part of London that feels both fresh and full of stories.

Rooftop drinks with a view: London's rooftop bars are perfect for soaking in the city's skyline with a drink in hand. The Piazza Terrace Bar at the Royal Opera House offers a serene spot above Covent Garden, serving seasonal drinks and light bites with views over the bustling piazza below. For a more elevated experience, GŎNG at the Shangri-La in The Shard holds the title of Europe's highest rooftop bar, featuring stunning city vistas from the 52nd floor. Meanwhile, the rooftop bar at The Trafalgar St. James hotel provides sweeping views of Trafalgar Square and beyond, complemented by seasonal drinks and small plates. Whether you're in the mood for a tranquil afternoon or a lively evening, London's rooftop bars offer a variety of atmospheres to enjoy the city's iconic views.

Afternoon tea at Sketch in London's Mayfair is a theatrical and indulgent experience that blends art, design and culinary creativity. Served in the Gallery — a space renowned for its blush-pink interiors designed by India Mahdavi and adorned with whimsical art by David Shrigley — this tea elevates the traditional British pastime into a multisensory event. The menu features delicate finger sandwiches, sultana scones with jam and an array of miniature pastries such as rhubarb cheesecake, violet and raspberry choux and a tangy citrus meringue. A standout moment is the arrival of the "caviar man," who presents a spoonful of caviar to be enjoyed alongside a frothy egg served in a ceramic eggshell, adding a touch of theatricality to the experience. Sketch’s afternoon tea is perfect for those seeking a memorable and visually stunning setting.

Need to know

A trip to London is possible for all budgets. Luxury and elegant experiences abound but but with careful planning and preparation it can be done on a modest budget. Public transport is highly efficient and safe. There are so many options to get fabulous take out food for picnics. The big supermarkets have mini versions of their stores where you can find ‘meal deals’ on take out food. There are so many free things to do and you won’t need to feel like a tourist. Fabulous parks, free exhibitions and museums, river walks and so much more.
