Advisor - Medellín, Cartagena & Barú: The Perfect Colombia Combo
Curator’s statement

Colombia completely surprised me in the best way, and it made for such a fun girls’ trip. It’s a destination where every stop feels distinct: the energy and creativity of Medellín, the color and rhythm of Cartagena, and the beachy calm of Barú. What stood out most was how warm and welcoming it felt, paired with experiences that felt both local and cosmopolitan. It’s the kind of trip that gives you culture, beauty, and true relaxation without ever feeling overdone.

Things to do in Colombia

  • Comuna Tour and cable car (Medellín): One of the most meaningful parts of the trip. Seeing Medellín’s transformation up close, paired with incredible views from the cable car, adds real depth beyond just “being there.”

  • Day trip to Guatapé and Piedra del Peñol: A full day that’s absolutely worth it. Climbing the iconic rock for panoramic views, then slowing down in the colorful town and out on the water, feels like a true snapshot of Colombia.

  • Coffee farm experience (Medellín countryside): A beautiful, easy half-day that gets you into the lush green landscape just outside the city. Learning the process from bean to cup makes every coffee after taste better.

  • Beach time in Barú: Exactly what you want it to be. Long, slow days by the water with a polished, easy setup that lets you fully relax without overthinking anything.

  • Private island-hopping day: One of the highlights. Being out on the water all day, stopping to swim, snorkel, and have lunch at a beach club, makes for a really fun and effortless day.

  • Walking tour of Cartagena and Getsemaní: The best way to get oriented and understand the city beyond the surface. It blends history, architecture, and local culture in a way that makes Cartagena feel more layered.

  • Music and dancing in Cartagena: Cartagena has such a fun energy at night. It naturally turns into a full evening of music, dancing, and moving between spots without much planning.

  • Boutique shopping in Cartagena: Cartagena is surprisingly great for shopping. Think curated boutiques, local designers, and unique pieces that feel very specific to the destination.

  • Time to wander and enjoy: What made this trip special was the balance. There was just enough structure, but also plenty of time to wander, linger, and let the destination unfold naturally.

Places to eat & drink in Colombia

Ocio in Medellin

Medellín

  • Ocio: A perfect first-night dinner spot with a cool, design-forward feel and really well-executed dishes. It feels elevated but still relaxed, which sets the tone for the trip.

  • Carmen (Medellín and Cartagena): One of the best meals of the trip. Contemporary Colombian cuisine with a refined edge, great service, and a setting that feels special without being overly formal.

  • Mamasita: High-energy, open-air dining that easily turns into a night out. The food is solid, but it’s really about the atmosphere and a fun, social vibe.

Cartagena

  • Cande: A classic Cartagena night out. Traditional food, live music, and a lively atmosphere that gives you a sense of place without feeling touristy.

  • Celele: A standout meal and one of the most interesting in Cartagena. It’s thoughtful, ingredient-driven, and a great way to experience a more modern side of Colombian cuisine.

  • Alquímico: One of the most fun nights out. A multi-level cocktail bar with a great mix of locals and visitors, strong drinks, and a high-energy but still stylish feel.

  • Juan del Mar: A great last-night dinner spot with a relaxed but polished feel. A good mix of local and international dishes in a setting that works for a longer, easy evening.

Need to know

  • Colombia is very easy to navigate with a well-planned itinerary and private transfers, and each stop feels distinct from city to coast.

  • Pack for both environments: Medellín is mild year-round, while Cartagena and Barú are hot, humid, and very beach-forward.

  • Safety is more about awareness than concern. Stick to known areas, use arranged transport at night, and be mindful with phones and valuables.

  • Make dinner reservations in advance for top spots, but leave room for spontaneity, especially for drinks and going out.

  • The heat in Cartagena and Barú is real - lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and bug spray are essentials.

  • Don’t overschedule it. The best parts of the trip are the slower moments where you can just enjoy being there.
