Charleston Waterfront Park
Go to the beach—Isle of Palms: Just a short drive from downtown, Isle of Palms offers wide sandy shores, gentle waves, and plenty of space for beach games. Families love its clean facilities and the chance to spot dolphins playing in the distance.
Visit Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Parks: Take a ferry ride to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, and explore historic cannons and barracks. Fort Moultrie offers more hands-on areas for kids to imagine life as a soldier.
South Carolina Aquarium: Located right on the harbor, this aquarium is perfect for kids who love sea life. From sea turtles to touch tanks, it offers interactive exhibits and a beautiful view of the water.
Patriots Point / USS Yorktown: Step aboard the historic aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and explore planes, submarines, and exhibits that bring naval history to life. Kids will especially enjoy exploring the tight quarters and imagining life at sea.
Visit the Waterfront and take a photo in front of the iconic pineapple fountain: This scenic park along the Cooper River is a great place for kids to run around while parents enjoy harbor views. The pineapple fountain is one of Charleston’s most famous photo spots.
Lowcountry Children’s Museum: Designed just for kids, this museum offers interactive exhibits that encourage creativity and hands-on learning. It’s an excellent rainy-day option or break from sightseeing.
Take a carriage ride downtown: Experience Charleston’s historic district from a horse-drawn carriage as a guide shares fascinating stories about the city. Kids will love the horses, while adults will enjoy the history.

Obstinate Daughter: Located on Sullivan’s Island, this stylish spot is known for its creative pizzas, fresh pastas, and local seafood. Parents love the upscale flavors while kids enjoy the familiar dishes.
Pour Taproom and Rooftop Bar: While parents sample a variety of beers, wines, and ciders, kids can enjoy fun rooftop games like giant Jenga or cornhole. It’s a surprisingly family-friendly hangout with great views.
Need to know
Best time to visit: Spring and fall bring pleasant weather, blooming gardens, and fewer crowds. Summer is great for beach time, but expect heat and humidity.
Getting around: Downtown Charleston is very walkable, but parking can be tricky—consider using public garages or rideshares. Additionally, downtown is not very stroller friendly, so keep that in mind.
Beach gear: If heading to Isle of Palms, you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and even beach games from local outfitters.
Dress comfortably: Between cobblestones and sandy beaches, comfortable walking shoes are a must.
